Humphrey Archer

60+ three-time immigrant, whose life in Africa, Australia, and America, work with industrial and medical quality & safety, and obsession with mortality data and accidents, results in morbid short stories.

I write fiction that are like “Final Destination” meets “The Monkey’s Paw” (W. W. Jacobs, 1902). A little bit Poe, a touch of Dahl, and a hint of Gorey.

When I am not writing, I do bare-bow archery, walk a husky, and pick up other people's litter.

The whole "pay for book reviews" plot stinks. Like who wrote this stupid arc?

25 What comes first: setting, character, plot? What comes next?

It varies by piece. Some start with an engaging character, some start with a piece of plot, some with an outcome. I don’t have a typical start scenario

@the_paperback_psychologist
My latest novel might interest you - the central character is a primary psychopath and it follows her development. I think I got the neuropsychology and psychiatry bits plausible

I can send an ARC if that sound interesting

How much saphic content does a book needs to get your attention? I'm told my latest is somewhat, but I wouldn't say it's the focus.

Same kind of rent-seeking from "Indies Today"

They identify the problem facing - getting reviews, but then insert themselves to offer a "service" for paid reviews.

Another example of rent-seeking corporatism that paracitizes . The basic ploy is "hey, want to get your book reviewed? Pay us to give you the email of book bloggers"

This kind of gatekeeping hurts indie writers, and adds to the friction that bogs them down.

Tough quandery, but probably an effective filter.

If you are that easily disturbed, then the book is likely going to freak you out, and you won't enjoy it.

I use zero AI in writing, and I use a minimal amount for the start of cover art. The image in the blog is fun, and steals from nobody.

If you want to support indie authors, then support them, don't emulate the toxic publishing industry and set myriad hurdles, pitfalls, and conditions.

Hey and people,

Can you recommend a or that does the more complex noire books?

I have a bit of a genre problem, and my book is in a liminal space where modern-noire, thriller, mystery, suspense, and goth intersect

Here's the press release blog with details and a link to the book

@masukomi

Yah, the "let's add a law" crowd are either stupidly or cynically just semaphoring to their base that they are "doing something", but it's all just hurtful pantomime

Right. Just not a mentionable risk.

Amazon via GoodReads takes a nice thing and turns it ugly, extractive, and tawdry.

If I want to do a giveaway so can get a free , Amazon wants me to pay them, so they make money both ways.

Summary of Amazon "giveaway", which requires the author to pay either $119 for the standard package or $599 for the premium, in which the author gives away some of their own creation

@masukomi
Agreed
It's one of those edge cases that I would absolutely not rule out - because somewhere, sometime, there is going to be a guy that tries it, BUT the chances that YOU will ever encounter him are practically zero.

It would be preposterous to suppose that this is a regular or likely situation
