“Een wereld vol denkers” is non-fiction and will be published Sep 2025 by Uitgeverij Balans. An English translation is not (yet) planned, but expressions of interest will make this much more likely! Illustrations by @theodanes uitgeverijbalans.nl/boeken/een

Through these kinds of questions, I explore the many different ways of thinking that surround us. This is especially important now that, with the rise of advanced AI, we are dealing for the first time in history with a new form of thinking that we barely understand. How can we deal with that?! 4/5

Is #consciousness something that you either have (like a human adult) or don’t have (like a rock), or can something or someone also have a little bit of consciousness? And if so, does advanced AI have a little bit of consciousness, and how can you even know? 3/5

Can a #bumblebee fear for her life? When a #buttercup follows the sun, can you say that she perceives the sun? And how can it be that #octopuses and sea otters somewhat resemble each other in their behavior, while they are separated by half a billion years of evolution? 2/5

😊🌟✒️ Proud 📖 announcement! ✒️🌟😊 Over the past year, I have been working on “Een wereld vol denkers” (“A world of thinkers”), an exploration of the #thoughts, #feelings, and #consciousness of humans, animals, plants, and artificial #intelligence (AI). 1/5 #popsci #psychology

#psychologie #wetenschap 1/5

@naught101 The most important check is whether the AI grader agrees with human graders at least as much as human graders agree with each other. (So this means that in this stage two human graders also look at a subset of the answers.) Students are also allowed to flag answers that they feel were incorrectly graded by the AI. And finally there are some psychometric checks that you can do to verify the quality of an exam, such as how well the response to one question predicts the response on the remaining questions.

Many people are understandably hesitant when it comes to using AI in high-stakes situations. But when done responsibly and transparently, there are enormous benefits. That's our aim with Heymans! 3/3

2024-11-21

We did extensive quality checks with complete transparency towards the students. Things went smoothly and we detected few issues. Students were happy and we were able to offer a far better examination than we would have without AI, in which case we would have had to resort to multiple choice. 2/3

Tomorrow I'll visit the #UniversityOfAmsterdam
to talk about #Heymans
, our @universityofgroningen project for using AI to improve the quality of teaching. We recently conducted a first pilot with AI grading of an open-ended exam for a large course with a total of 4,300 written answers. 1/3
