I'm a dude that did a bunch of stuff like the HeyTell app, and recently I made 8bitworkshop.com so everyone can do 8-bit programming in their browser! I make other stuff too! #8bit #atari #apple2 #c64 #6502 #z80

I always felt frustrated there wasn’t a native macOS alternative to Ciderpress. The good news is that since I am now retired I don’t have to feel frustrated. This is what I have so far.

Tentative name, Floppy years 😀

@fortyseven I thought it was “be told” or something weird like that. Nick Meyer isn’t even around to make him do repeated takes until he starts mumbling, this is all Bill.

@kevbob I think you're right that it's a different band... the article mentions The Asylum which was a dance club under the pier. That and the groovy page layout probably places the article early-1970s. Way before my time there, but there used to be national acts like The Byrds playing at the pier. But now some horrible timeshare people own it and they eliminated the historical artifacts and the good happy hour.

@kevbob that’s what I saw too. I should sign up for that newspapers.com subscription they’re always nagging me about.

2026-01-14

@kevbob maybe, definitely pre-1984 because the name of the pier changed. I do see they played a few Florida shows in the early 80s.

@rc2014 @Retrograde I’m always worried about that guy. I hope he has someone to keep him away from high ledges, pirate island riptides, and rooms full of alligators.

Reading old video card reviews is really strange. The writers of PC Magazine knew their shit.

They would be docking points because a certain VGA BIOS returned the wrong value of AL for some int 10h call, because they were writing code for the cards they were reviewing.

At some point video card reviews became, "run crysis, write down number"

This new Apple II game is an incredible take on Frogger and Crossy Road. It's extremely well-made and has varied and fun challenges. Bravo, Ben and Paul Wasson.

For anyone wishing to start the year off making a DOS game restricted by one of the most minimalist video standards in PC history, have I got a jam for you! This runs to the end of February and all CGA DOS games are welcome, regardless of stage of development!

This is Quake running on CGA. Normally Quake requires VGA (320x200 256 colours), but WinQuake can actually run fine on any card supported by Windows 95.

Now, CGA doesn't support Windows 95. But turns out with a little manual hex editing, it can start with a CGA driver from Windows 3.0 (I believe no one succeeded in doing this before). And with Windows 95 kind of sort of running on CGA, @gloriouscow recommended to try if Quake would run. It does, and it is almost playable. Definitely more playable than Doom8088 on MDA.

#Vectrex game recorded with super slow-mo impressively shows how the machine works. Due to high speed, the individual vector lines form the whole game screen due to our eyes' & brain's high perception latency.
