I should have done this a long time ago, but I only had wool yarn on hand. This bamboo sock yarn is perfect for the purpose. And it doesn't matter if my dyed hair stains them pink!

I have half a mind to decorate the top of the headphones with the same yarn, but I don't know what motif... My embroidery skills are limited. Anyone have ideas? #visiblemending #repaircafe

A pair of grey noise cancelling headphones with very worn out foam pads. The foam is peeping out of the split and peeling faux leather. One side has been repaired by wrapping it in pink and red yarn. The other side is a third of the way done, a trail of yarn still attached to a needle. The ball of yarn is pictured next to the headphones.

@stuartgale @jonmsterling I can even smell the Aqua era iMac I had when I see this.

@jonmsterling your talk of prefering Mac OS X's Aqua UI inspired me. I've now got a emulator running Jaguar. I really like the pin stripe menu bars!

In 1979 BYTE magazine published The BYTE Book of Pascal, an anthology of articles about the language, comparisons with other languages, and lots of source code of programs ranging from Pascal compilers to utilities and games.

A fascinating account of an era when Pascal was still relatively new and promising and programmers were discovering what it could do.

My late #genx #genx80s #eldermillennial nostalgists: Do you remember viscerally generic Safeway sodas?

To this day I have a sense memory of their "GRAPE" having more bite than metal and more (grape drink) bite than seems possible.

I remember their lemon-lime green drink being profoundly refreshing compared to (I guess) 7-Up.

Does anyone else remember this #Soda

@bamboombibbitybop an interesting data point: my ancient laptop has been compiling #vscode for the last 10 hours: rust from scratch dep, node 20 from scratch dep, giant pieces of electron.

The inaccessibility of #vscode versus #vim or #emacs makes it a weird sort of luxury. It forces us into expensive #hardware for dubious purchases and locks out engineers who need to function at lower budgets.

That said, I’d say #linux distros and #freebsd not having a faster, unbound-to-CPU solution are leaving adopters on the table.

@maxine why then the demos will be entirely dependent on their suppliers who can then seek rent at astronomical values of course!

I remain confused by the 'it's not a Nazi salute, it's a Roman salute' defence. Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to associate you with a genocidal imperial regime that put people in death camps, when you actually meant to be associated with the genocidal imperial regime built on slavery that just murdered people without transporting them anywhere first and then enslaved their families. My mistake?

@bamboombibbitybop

I use vscode and like it. It has good vim bindings. Agentic AI is a value add to me.

But on my 10-year old #freebsd box, I have been building it for nearly 3 hours. In the same time I’ve vim edited dozens of files and composed several emails with it.

But I love your take on the missing fun element. My old car had a great door shut sound, my bike has a BELL clear enough to cut through ice and vim makes me feel like I’m painting. To surface those feelings via a tool is special (cf Bret Victor’s entire oeuvre).

Americans confused by the Canadian election need to learn the two types of democracies:

1) a Parliamentary system
2) a Funkadelicary system

In a Parliament, Dr. Funkenstein summons the Mothership to defeat Sir Noze

In a Funkadelic, freeing your mind allows your maggot brain to create one nation

100 Mastodon myths:

1. Mastodon is hard.

FALSE. It’s a "soft"ware. Not hardware.

2. You have to use Linux to post on Mastodon.

FALSE. FreeBSD and OpenBSD are also supported.

3. You need to learn to use the Vim editor before posting on Mastodon.

FALSE. There’s also an emacs plugin.

4. Mastodon is only for computer nerds.

FALSE. As you can see, we sometimes try to make jokes that everyone could understand.

@r1w1s1 I still use plain old c vim as my primary editor, but I view being able to recover a system with /rescue/vi as being different from a coding language editor where threads for linting, transpiling, codegen, AI, are all designed to help our hominid brains mitigate their weaknesses.

Apparently #PerplexityAI CEO is annoyed that people are sharing that article where he is quoted saying that their browser will track everything users do to sell more ads.

> “That’s kind of one of the other reasons we wanted to build a browser, is we want to get data even outside the app to better understand you,” Srinivas said.
