I really hate that Chrome on Android opens a new tab every time I click on an external link. It's like every click comes with a free gift of chaos!

Why doesn't google have a "duplicate" email feature to create a copy of a previously sent email????

It seems like such a obvious feature it must be a design choice but I have no idea why they would choose to omit it.

Unpopular opinion: Offices are good for company performance. Prove me wrong.

How do you measure productivity in tech workers?

Since the pandemic first hit there has been a lot of debate over whether working in the office improves productivity. Some say they are much more productive at home. At the same time, we see many companies insisting that people return to the office. But this debate hinges on the critical question of how we measure productivity in the first place.

Perhaps if we can answer this first it will help better inform our in-office policies.

Google's incognito mode is not so incognito.

"We need to stop calling it incognito and stop using a Spy Guy icon," an engineer wrote to Google colleagues in 2018.

TweetHunter is now automatically re-activating paused accounts. Yeah, I'm SURE increased fraud is why they're doing this...

Data is not valuable unless it spurs action.

A personal case-in-point: I have been tracking my food in FitBit for a long time. This year, when my wife and I decided we were going to increase our efforts to get fit I realized I had all this tracking information but I wasn't doing anything about it. It seems ludicrous in retrospect, but I see businesses take this same approach all the time. Tons of data but no action.

How is your business using data to drive action?

Why do we separate operational alerts and data from security alerts and data?

We talk about breaking down silos and yet, in almost every mid to large organization I work with, these are two separate silos of data. Splunk even has two separate products - ITSI for operations and SEIM for security. But are these problems and solutions really so different?

Does the security benefit of separating this data (and teams and processes and tools) outweigh the potential benefits?

I bought Call of Duty for PlayStation this weekend...
Five hours overnight to download... 😠
FINALLY got it running... 😡

But no... another two hours to download campaign mode 🤬

A) Why TF do we need CDs if we've got to download anyway?

B) Really folks? It's 2024 and this is the user experience?

So awesome to see people learning from my book!

I had the distinct privilege of joining the Jeff Dunlap and the Naval Postgraduate School as a guest lecturer. The class has been reading The #DevSecOps Playbook to learn about the latest approaches to #cybersecurity.

In this course Jeff is truly pushing the boundaries to bring the latest technology approaches to help protect our county. It is a honor to be a small part of driving this sort of #innovation in our armed forces.

If you are in technology, what is one thing you learned on the job that you did not learn at school?

For me, one of the most impactful, was building and operating systems at scale. In school I never built a system for more than one person (the professor). The many lessons I've learned since then about managing large distributed systems are certainly ones that I was not taught in college.
