Reminds me: Anyone trying the "we can't regulate unpredictable future side effects of new technology" argument against the idea that we should have reined in these thugs is either stupid or works for Big Tech.
This was neither unpredictable, nor is it side effects. It's exactly what was intended & we were loudly warned at the time.
This is a case where the lack of regulation and standardisation benefits no one, and outright impedes addoption, innovation and growth to the detriment of small to mid-sized companies and most of all, the consumers.
The sheer amount of incompatible platforms and arbitrary standards grows every year: Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Philips Hub, ZigBee, Matter (... etc)
A point has been reached where we now have thousands of app-limited devices, hundreds of platforms and dozens of pseudo-standards that is becoming increasingly complex and hostile towards consumers.

- Smart-device vendors must provide sufficient material for maintenance, repair and continued usage of the device.
