Choosing to wear a mask extends far beyond an individual act; it becomes a powerful statement of care and responsibility towards our community. Every mask worn is a protective gesture that says 'I respect and protect those around me.'

"Being able to say, 'wherever you get your podcasts' is a radical statement. Because what it represents is the triumph of exactly the kind of technology that's supposed to be impossible: open, empowering tech that's not owned by any one company, that can't be controlled by any one company, and that allows people to have ownership over their work and their relationship with their audience." - @anildash
Powerful to think of this in the context of messaging too.

I saw an article a few days ago—sorry, can't find the link—making the argument that "Punch Nazis!" is counterproductive since so many people around us are "proto-Nazis" who only go full-on Nazi if that's the way the wind is blowing, and we shouldn't punch them.
Nobody's talking about punching proto-Nazis.
We're talking about punching actual Nazis.
The reason why we punch them is to ensure we never get to the point where the proto-Nazis think it's safe to go full Nazi.
genuinely fuck necroposting culture. why did we all decide that interacting with old posts is rude or even creepy(!). stop that. one of the good things about the internet is how easily culture and knowledge can interact across time
Interview with WHO's #COVID19 lead:
"The virus is rampant. We’re still in a pandemic. There’s a lot of complacency at the individual level."
"Using masks for respiratory pathogens that transmit through the air is a no-brainer—plus vaccination, plus distancing, plus improving ventilation."
"We don’t know everything about this virus. Even in year five."
"What I tell my own family, what I say publicly, is 'Take measures every day as a precaution.'”

The idea of dominating nature has a history that is almost as old as that of hierarchy itself.

Good talk about the implications of the Swiss Cheese model of security.
The model's attributable to James Reason who also did foundational work categorizing human error. The really central part of his Slips, Trips, and Lapses is that *everyone* has bad days and different parts of your system fail you; it's very rarely carelessness. Error's scale and traceability vary, too.
If what we depend on is someone never making a mistake, I have bad news for you 😬.

Unfortunately, there are signs that there is an uptick in COVID-19 wastewater levels again after a couple of weeks of decline.
This underscores the importance of not relaxing too quickly after we reach any COVID peak, as it takes time for levels to drop. Keep taking precautions.
I say to all pessimists: Look at the 1930s. America got radical af about Socialism and dealing with the Gilded Age bastards who orchestrated 1929 and all that came after.
And they did so with far less in terms of ability to talk to each other and make plans. We still have the internet, for now.
Whoever tells you to disengage or be cynical, whoever tells you it can't be fixed is a lying bastard. We (humans, I mean) have come back from so much worse than these fascists.
I mean, "chaos" is a meaning of the word, but it's not a meaning that has any relevance to social thought. Anarchy as a social philosophy has never meant "chaos" -- in fact, anarchists have typically believed in a highly organized society, just one that's organized democratically from below.

Thinking of starting your own business? Of starting your own consultancy?
Tired of being exploited and want to exploit others? Finally get ahead in this rat race?
Instead, create a co-op and spread the profits around. You'll maintain your employees better, everyone benefits, and we start to end this cycle of exploit or be exploited.
@tinker Yes. Worse than that, it's intentional market manipulation by activist investors colluding across companies for the explicit and sole purpose of suppressing wages.
Tools exist for peace making, for public health for ecosystem protection for community wellbeing. Often they are the least expensive, least technical option. They take time and care. But most of all they take leaders who are oriented to protection of life and away from mass death.
Remember when COVID happened and many workers died?
Remember when the workers that remained started demanding better pay and conditions?
Remember when workers, even unorganized workers, had the leverage?
Remember when there were more jobs than workers? (No one wants to work anymore! 😭)
None of that has changed. We're still there.
Remember when business leaders said they had to fire people & squeeze them & take losses in order to gain back the upper hand?
That's what this is.
@tinker real, bc after sifting through 300+ applications and completing 5 interviews, I can confirm that these corporations prioritize hiring for statistics. They often choose inexperienced workers at lower wages, sidestepping experienced candidates demanding better pay. This allows them to shape a media narrative, suggesting a shortage of willing workers. It's a clear instance of corporate gaslighting, feeling like a form of punishment in the era of the "Great Resignation."
