I can’t see AI being as disruptive as the advent of Cloud Computing was 15 years ago. Most of the time code just runs, so infrastructure/platform is still a major part of the cost. Sure, making developers more efficient saves bit of time and money spent at the start, but maintenance is also a significant cost burden. Is the promise of AI that software will become like junk from the $2 shop and when it stops working or zero days are discovered, that you will just discard it and buy something new? Given the persistent looming threat of security, including vulnerabilities and bugs, I suspect #AI will only ever be able to do so much, and developers that know the platforms and how to code will always be required.

@firstdogonthemoon thank god for first dog on the moon. I’m so sick of hearing “the media” in Australia talk about the Liberal National Party.

Ed Husic, now relegated by Labor to the backbench, has penned an editorial for the Guardian calling on Australia to take more action to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The actions he is calling for are really the bare minimum that Australia should do.

Look, another use for that bear costume you just happen to have hidden in a closet in case of any nearby "Furry" events... for wildlife rehabilitation 🤪

Two different approaches to debugging a software problem:

The Sudoku approach: stare at the limited set of clues you have, and think harder and harder about them until you find a way to deduce something useful.

The Minesweeper approach: don't even try to figure out the solution from only the clues you have right now. Instead, focus on finding a way to acquire another clue, and then using that to get another, and so on. Eventually you've collected so many clues that the answer is obvious.

Sometimes the Sudoku approach is necessary, because you've got all the clues you're ever going to get. But I think my new motto is "Never Sudoku a problem when you can Minesweeper it."

Upon further consideration, I feel should point out that many low-cost or "free" VPNs very much do route other peoples' traffic through your system. This is an incredibly common practice among "free" or low-cost VPN providers. Just understand that running a VPN is not cheap, and anyone giving it away for free probably does not have your best interests at heart.

Completing a 100-kilometre ultramarathon is hard. Winning is harder. Winning after starting 30 minutes later than the rest of the field is just about impossible, and doing it all six months postpartum while stopping every few kilometres to breastfeed your baby would be too far- fetched for Hollywood. And yet, that's what Stephanie Case did earlier this week. " peigneeverticale and theultrarun

I discovered #qucs-s recently. At Qt6 based gui front end for simulating electric circuits with #ngspice. It appears to be a rewrite of qucs but with support for spice-compatible component libraries. Some clever and very useful #FOSS. The wikipedia page for circuit simulators says it does not include #Linux in the list of supported OS, and sure I had to build it with a good ole ./configure but it seems to run on my Ubuntu 24.04 LTS laptop just fine. #hamRadio #AmatuerRadio #NotAllRussians

@ai6yr the age of your sewing machine is impressive. Might that have something to do with the tension? It certainly looks more cost effective than my ortlieb. Are you going to open source the pattern?

Well, that did not go as well as hoped, LOL. Bobbin or needle tension issued cropped up on the lid.... multiple layers of fabric and velcro appears to need more (less?)...errr different tension.

Anyway, here you go, amateur designed, amateur constructed,, amateur radio equipment bag. #diy #hamradio #sewing

Two pocket DIY sewn padded bag with a Yaesu Ft818ND ham radio and a Morse Code key made out of an old license plate crammed into pockets. Bright green bag with a divider in dog themed fleeceGreen bag with velcro next to a Singer 201 sewing machineHorrible, horrible sewing job where you can see the tension on a bobbin went out of whack on sewing on the outside of a green bag. Extremely obvious because it was done with a neon orange thread

@ai6yr @kevinhuotari

Our fellow ham built an amazing QRP for your wrist! The thread mentioned could be used in a wristband for the watch to extend the whips range and perhaps maintain its water resistance.

@tml @davidaugust it is about rotation in that Gauss’s law for magnetism shows that magnetic field lines always form closed loops, and the field has a direction, ie it rotates about an axis. At any point in space the three vectors: field, force, current are mutually orthogonal. But over any finite element larger than a point (let’s face it a point is a mathematical construct) the magnetic field rotates. Subatomic particles also have spin.

@tml @davidaugust in physics/engineering there is the right hand (or left hand) rule because clockwise/anticlockwise doesn’t cut it in 3 dimensions #rightHandRule

Handy bilingual mnemonic for tool use. 🪛🔩

#English #Spanish #screw #unscrew #tools #mnemonic

"Rightie tightie, leftie loosie" in Spanish is
"la derecha oprime, la izquierda libera."

[image of a screw with a curved arrow pointing to the left, another identical screw image with an arrow pointing to the right]

Meaning:
"the right oppresses, the left liberates."
