What Is The Answer?

I found this (second slide) image of a 1914 cover of Judge magazine, with original cover art done by F.E. Outerbridge, while researching a different artist. It's minimalist, yet so impactful. I love it and just had to include it my Faces 2025 sketchbook.

The beauty of a sketchbook is experimentation.

I deviated dramatically from my typical approach on this one. Usually I draw the picture in pencil first, then ink it, and then color it. But this time I threw down a bunch of different watercolors then sketched on top of that. I added more color once inked because I wanted to fill in certain areas.

It was pretty unnerving because I was worried about needing to erase lines like I usually do, many times, whilst composing the image, but it all worked out in the end. I'm pretty pleased. Although, looking back now, I wish I had chosen different colors.

Thank you, it's great to be here! I do sometimes think I may have bit off too big a bite but at the same time, I have little else to fill my days. I have nothing else going on and no family here in SD, so my non-working hours and days I fill with art.

This drawing was inspired by a painting by and unknown artist titled "Portrait of A", believed to be poet Ann Akkmatova, from the 1920s (second image). Additional images accompany the painting with more information. I found it on Art of The Zero Category, a website dedicated to a collection of paintings banned in Russia by Stalin. The website is a fascinating look into Stalin-era Russia and the modern art trade. I definitely recommend checking it out. artofthezero.com

More practice with the blending stump and various graphite hardness. Inspired by an image of a sculpture I saw online somewhere. The mood and lighting just hit me in some kind of way so I had to sketch it.
