"It wasn't until I started painting six or seven days a week that I saw my capabilities become a lot greater. .... Without painting as much as I did, I wouldn't be able to do what I'm trying to achieve right now. I guess my biggest advice would be to paint as much as you can. Don't get caught up on this social media thing. Just ignore that stuff. Just have fun with it, but work harder."

"Lemon," Édouard Manet, 1880.

Manet (1832-83) was a pivotal figure in Western art; he was the first real Modernist painter, in that he specialized in depictions of contemporary life. He was also an important figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.

Some of his works generated scandal and controversy, like the famous "Dejeuner sur l'Herbe" (a picnic scene with nude women), and "Olympia," in which a nude courtesan matter-of-factly confronts the viewer. Here, though, we have a subdued picture of something simple: a lemon.

In 1880 his health was in decline, due to late-stage syphilis, and he began focusing on small-scale still lifes. Rather than arranging many objects, he'd focus on one, or a grouping of one type of thing. Manet is reported as saying that "an artist can say all he has to say with flowers, fruit, and clouds" and this seems to click with that view. This is a good reminder that in something mundane and everyday, like a lemon, art can be found.

He completed one last major painting, the famous "Bar at the Folies Bergeres" in 1882, and up to his death the following year, painted small pictures of flowers in crystal vases.

From the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.

Sheer Joy

To me, this graphite pencil drawing ‘Sheer Beauty – 28-11-25’ was nothing but sheer joy to create. Maximal tonal tension: hefty and subtle combined. That was my very aim doing this one. Also to test a new paper I got my hands on. I had never used Clairfontaine Ingres paper before, and its delicate grain offered surprising control over graphite diffusion. The Faber Castell Pitt 14B pencil’s softness allowed me to push contrast without losing subtlety. This experiment became a meditation on light - how it touches, hides, and reveals. Why not better do this by employing sheer structures? Lately I have become intrigued by these and I recall how fun it was to create ‘Sheer Deco Nude – 14-10-22’. It empowers me to push my limits and kick that tonal can down the road even further. As to the subject: I found the perfect model to do the job. Great session!

Broken Tonal Play of Light and Dark

Well, time to also honor Seurat’s broken tonal compositions whose meritable attempts on paper I had the pleasure to see. Many times of course and I remember last time when there was a big exhibition in the Kröller Muller Museum. There you have it. Two sound reasons motivating to experiment with sheer curtains filtering light into a fractured play of light and shadows. The Clairfontaine Ingres paper has a nice tooth and offers great tonal response. Its surface surprised me with subtle depth, even though one can scratch very hard into its grain without destroying.

"... Mearsheimer’s theory is based on five assumptions: the international system is anarchic (there is no supreme authority or nightwatchman that can limit the behaviour of states); all great powers possess offensive military capability; states can never be certain about other states’ intentions; survival is a state’s paramount goal; and states are rational actors that think about how they can survive in a time of anarchy."

"Spanish Iris, Morning Glory, and Cherries," Georg Flegl, 1630.

Flegl (1566-1638) was a German painter of still lifes. Not much is known of his life or personality, just some details as to who he trained with or apprenticed to.

At first, he was an assistant to Lucas van Valckenborch, painting flowers or other objects as trimming to his portraits or other subjects. This particular painting comes at the tail end of a thirty-year period (1600-30) when he produced around 110 still lifes, many that featured tables set for meals. This is thought to be a reference drawing, rather than an intentional work of art. It's something he could refer to when doing a still life, or even as a sample to show a potential client how well he could paint. Apparently there was quite a cache of these works in Berlin, some of which did not survive WWII.

Of course, these days, the stark, sparse arrangement, with the precise realism reminiscent of scientific illustration, makes this a work of art in itself, and perhaps an early precursor to modernism.

Happy Flower Friday!

You don’t need to control your emotions — you need to see them.
Deconstruction reveals how emotion isn’t truth but the machinery of imagination defending an identity.

New watercolor tutorial went live today, it's a sunlit autumn forest. Painting sunlit spaces can be tricky in watercolor and you need to adjust and leave enough white to make it actually look sunny and light.

The live was edited, so there are no drying times or empty minutes. It's in real time still, so easy to follow for good results.

You might catch glimpses into the running dnd campaign.
