TIL "ascii smuggling" I wonder if this is still a thing at the bulgarian or greek border in the EU really...

that's also one of the reasons why I think databases are awesome examples of observability because you can just query the database about itself "hey how are your tables honey?" which is really cool

(kubernetes with advanced kubectl comes somewhat close)

so what if all services I ever write could do that? be queried, tell themselves their health, alert on issues themselves and just visualize it as games are doing (by virtue of their purpose)

2025-10-12

watching another "data oriented design" talk in c++ and I really like how for game stuff you basically get the visualization of your program behavior for free so I'm thinking a lot about how I could do this with observability on services because it's actually awesome to SEE behavior live.

(recently in a #zig talk about performance stuff they made a little racing track thingie as visualization)

because I'm so freaking tired to put up with making alerts and dashboards FROM THE OUTSIDE

chimera linux @chimera is calling out things good and proper and will therefore stay in my collection of distributions.

they had me at "reactionary dipshit" 😂

so. on monday my so far biggest project will have its last piece rolled out. I did good.

this is when I normally think about a new job and take a look at what I like to do, if I want something completely different or just take a year off or start bee keeping and pottery in the woods 😂

I just tested something with a sales person and the result is infuriating: it is simpler to create a dashboard in google sheets than it is to do the equivalent in grafana and even though there is a data source to connect a google sheet as a data source it which is so difficult to set up that it's easier to install an entire grafana instead.

so yeah.

my biggest loss after twitter is all the artists and the small, local stuff, cool projects and random niches I had collected over the years sitting right next to announcements from the fire department and the french ambassador calling trump a vulture

@kagihq not at the moment but I do read them, always. really good ones tell me also a lot about the product thinking and tech choices/ideas, scale and audience etc.

the optimal outcome is that I say "no" to a product because I'm really just not the audience but quietly think "a shame that it's not for me they really thought about their stuff"

@kagihq yes they do help my decision: I judge a company's honesty and their level of being transparent by it.
