this will likely be a recurring reminder as the weeks go by, but i'm so excited about this project. i have to share! (this is the first time i've been nervous to announce something on this side of the web!)

i'm combining my 10 years of journalism experience with my love for the #indieweb by launching GOOD INTERNET, a regular periodical magazine in both print and digital formats. and this is a non-profit, completely independent endeavor!

goodinternetmagazine.com/

ultimately, Good Internet will cover a lot of different aspects of the small web: unplugging from the corporate web, fighting #enshittification, migrating from data-harvesting corpo social media, creating your own personal website, using code and website-building as an art form, federation, and creating websites for fun. it will be approachable for beginners and enjoyable for seasoned indie web travelers!

the #smallweb can be hard to keep up with if you aren't "plugged in," especially if you want to find other hobby website owners, folks coding for fun, weird web projects, or artists taking back their digital ownership. it's overdue that this side of the web has an analog publication!

having a central publication about the decentralized parts of the personal web makes me even more excited to share this hobby with those who might not even know about it--all within beautiful, high-res, high-quality pages.

the idea here is to have a physical celebration of this hobby in addition to being informative, helpful, and accessible.

consider signing up for email notifications when we launch the first issue in may 2025:

goodinternetmagazine.com

(if you're interested in #writing an article or op-ed about this side of the web/personal websites, coding an interactive article, or want to know what that even means, send an email to hello@goodinternetmagazine.com! taking pitches for may 2025!)

@hexaheximal It works with weather stations that have a sensor that uses 433MHz as it's frequency (most of them do). Mine is the one in this picture, it's a generic one from Amazon, and the outside sensor can be picked up using rtl_433. I don't know if there a different standard in America but as far as I know it should work there too

@hexaheximal Yes, rtl_433 decodes weather stations with an RTL-SDR. Such a cool project.

The server side (the part that receives the data from the weather station and turns it into an HTML page and a file for the pygame interface) is OK, but I have to find a better way to pipe data from rtl_433 into it. Meanwhile I think i'll rewrite the interface in C using SDL or raylib, I want to port it to as many platforms as I can.

A year ago I made a small Python program I never released that took the info from my weather station (it's a generic temperature and humidity sensor) using an SDR and turned it into a nice HTML file. I later made a WeatherStar 4000 like interface for it using pygame and left it unfinished. I think this is a good time to finish this little project of mine.

I swapped the screens between the tablets because the one in the A23 has a giant black hole of dead pixels, and surprisingly they're compatible with each other. The only problem is that using the A13's screen on the A23 results in slightly washed out colors, but that's not a big deal.

@tech10 by saying "mastodon isn't a social" what they meant to say was we finally got rid of mastodon.social. it is no more

I've started to mess with my crappy Allwinner tablets again, and I even got UART on both! postmarketOS runs very well on my A23, well enough to run KDE Plasma and GNOME at ok speeds (definitely a bit sluggish sometimes)

I'm calling you out Mastodon. How often do you read the actual article when you boost a post that shares it?

(I'll count it if you boost then read it after, and remove it if you don't agree.)

I’ve no idea how this choosing a new Pope thing works but all that smoke suggests there’s a lot of old electronics involved.
