Why I won't use the word "sinister".

The word is derived from Latin and means 'left'. It has a twin "dexter" from which we get dexterous and dexterity; both positive traits.

Over the years the word was attached to that odd and troubling group, the left handed. Since left handers were clearly evil, "sinister" took on a new meaning.

We, as a society have been oppressing left handed people for thousands of years. Don't believe me? Try using a left handed keyboard or ruler.

A federal judge is scheduled to consider a request Wednesday to immediately release a Palestinian man who led protests against the war on Gaza as a student at Columbia University and was arrested during an interview about finalising his US citizenship.

Mohsen Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident for 10 years, was arrested on 14 April at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Colchester, Vermont, by ICE agents, his lawyers said.

Israel's Holocaust Remembrance Day, Wednesday and Thursday this week, will likely see Israeli and US politicians use the opportunity to suggest that their destruction of Gaza is somehow about protecting Jews from another Holocaust - and that anyone who protests against this destruction is really motivated by "antisemitism".

That’s certainly what happened last year, when both Israeli PM Netanyahu and former US President Biden made such claims.
