: As I celebrated another trip around the sun this weekend and hashtag#givingtuesday2023, I had a deep sense of #gratitude for where my life is. The older I get, the more I reflect on my teenage years. Whenever I tell people about my adolescent years, they never believe me.
At the end of my ninth-grade year, I had a 1.6 GPA and ten absences from being kicked out of high school and attending a continuation school.
That summer, I lied to get my first internship at a non-profit, Access to Software for All People (ASAP), focused on providing inner-city kids with IT skills. I remember becoming engrossed in learning everything about computers. I didn't own a computer then, so I would go to the library and use their computers to design websites (hashtag#webislife!). At the end of the summer, I was hired part-time during the school year. After the following Fall semester, I turned my grades around and earned a 4.0.
I always credit ASAP with setting me on my path and destiny. I have done amazing things, such as graduating with my Bachelor's and Master's in Computer Science and a Graduate Certificate in Information Security and Privacy. I was personally selected to be a research intern with Clarence "Skip" Ellis, the first African-American to graduate with a PhD in Computer Science. I traveled domestically and internationally to present my security research. None of these things would be possible without ASAP.
You’re wondering why I shared this story. I have a non-profit, The Accelerated Training Program (T-ATP), focused on providing underrepresented groups with #digitalliteracy and #cybersecurity skills.
We recently had two autumn workshops with K-12 students excited and skeptical about cybersecurity. After the students were fully immersed in cyber, I saw the same excitement and thirst for knowledge I had when learning about computers at ASAP. These students worked on cybersecurity challenges outside of class. At the end of the workshops, the accelerators received laptops from our partner E2D - Eliminate the Digital Divide to continue their cyber journey.
T-ATP is currently looking to grow our team with additional board members. Please consider volunteering if you're passionate about digital literacy, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion for underrepresented groups. If you would like to donate monetarily, we're also accepting that.
