@gerrymcgovern it’s shocking!

@gerrymcgovern it’s shocking!
@mariyadelano @admin that’s interesting. I think to be in a featured snippet you had to be somewhere on the first page, so the featured snippet allowed you to leapfrog the first page positions. If AI summaries take from the second page or further down, that’s a huge jump!
Trying to test if Google's feedback mechanism does anything. If you have 30 seconds, could you:
1) Search for my name https://www.google.com/search?q=rand+fishkin
2) Click "feedback" under the onebox result
3) Click the pencil icon next to the top, Google Books text
4) Choose "Outdated" and hit send
Thanks!
@glenngabe that was misreported. Marie Haynes mentioned it in this great round table discussion: https://youtu.be/oufB2MLCsvU
The impact of #generativeAI on search may extend the long tail further, potentially leading to a shift towards longer, more specific queries. - @ajkohn
Don’t underestimate this nugget of #SEO wisdom!
This is one of my favorite articles about cooking: https://slate.com/human-interest/2012/05/how-to-cook-onions-why-recipe-writers-lie-and-lie-about-how-long-they-take-to-caramelize.html
But does it rank for browning onions, or cooking onions, or making onions for french onion soup? No.
Does the rich snippet for browning onions lie? Yes.
And would a LLM trained on the web give the answer all the lying sources repeat? Yes.
You undercook/burn your onions. I'll stick with my favorite human writers.
@ajkohn @cyrusshepard this was such a great discussion. What a treat to hear your opinions, AJ. I hope to find you on more podcasts about this topic 🙏
SEO and Generative AI Roundtable Discussion
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jon Cooper, @cyrusshepard and Marie Haynes to discuss the changing SEO landscape with the advent of Generative AI content and search results.
Lots of interesting topics and points of view. If it's one thing about search, it's never boring.

The marvellous @clairecarlile ponders a life beyond or without #Google (insert audible gasp and horror here):

Good read this. Always worth checking those eggs + baskets situations and fallback plans!
Loving this album by ukulele master Azo Bell.
I made the mistake, while on #dialysis, to watch #Seaspiracy. I had no idea!
I’ve decided to eliminate fish from my diet. Being on a dialysis renal diet which is mostly protein and carbs, being Vegan is life threatening for me due to the high potassium in Vegan food.
Life is full of hard choices that I will never be comfortable with.
@andrewstroehlein @largess the South African government will never arrest Putin. They’re in China and Russias pocket.
Okay, so that AI letter signed by lots of AI researchers calling for a "Pause [on] Giant AI Experiments"? It's just dripping with AI hype. Here's a quick rundown.
First, for context, note that URL? The Future of Life Institute is a longtermist operation. You know, the people who are focused on maximizing the happiness of billions of future beings who live in computer simulations.

@randfish can you really correlate that drop with AI content? Could be technical issues, could be that the content sucks, could be March Core Update volatility etc. AI content is as good as the human publishing it.
@gerrymcgovern I work in digital (your early books kickstarted my career) and over the years advertising has become so ruthless! Google is one of the worse companies to work with, they’re cutthroat and push businesses to waste their budgets on crap advertising, their answer to everything is to increase ad spend. Most businesses don’t need search ads, it’s too expensive for their budgets and the Earth. Organic search is mush more trustworthy in customers’ eyes.
"I’m sorry to break it to anyone who has trouble keeping their car out of a bike lane (or off a concrete barrier), but it’s not the bike lane’s fault you’re a shitty driver. If you hit something stationary, that’s your fault. Pay attention to the fucking road while you’re driving. It’s not too much to ask when other people’s lives are literally at stake."

@shanselman @randfish the diversity angle is a bit weak, why can’t they just admit they want to profit from AI?
This is the perfect example of how to use AI. It’s convenient, costs less than hiring models and photographers. Do you really expect companies will not take advantage of this?
The infamous impressions surge without clicks following. I've written about this before, & it's often due to an image ranking in the SERPs (so you gain impressions, but nobody clicks). Digging in to see what caused this. Here's my post about impression spikes due to images ranking in the web results:
