Ever since learning from the #book @whysharksmatter (@HopkinsPress) that there is a species of shark named the Gummy #Shark (Mustelus antarcticus) I’ve been eager to return to Bruce’s Candy Kitchen in Cannon Beach, Oregon to see if they sold any gummy sharks. They don’t, but they do have sour sharks, which in my opinion should be an acceptable alternative common name for the Lemon Shark. 🤔🦈 #ichthyology #fish #whysharksmatter #candy #shoplocal #bookstodon

Great piece from @whysharksmatter on the strengths of the birdsite. I’d argue there’s zero reason why those exact same strengths can’t be had over here on Mastodon and the fediverse, with the added benefit of not being subject to or supporting surveillance capitalism. Makes me excited to see what the future holds for communities here on the fediverse!

Shark researchers watched 202 television episodes of #SharkWeek, and they were not not not impressed.

Among the findings:
🦈 Most featured no actual scientific research
🦈 Many others featured questionable research and pseudo-science
🦈 Only 6 episodes had actionable tips for shark conservation
🦈 There were more white male non-scientists named Mike interviewed than women of any profession

Big news in shark conservation world: these CITES proposals, which I wrote about when they were hypotheticals, have now PASSED!

Apparently folks are supposed to make an #introduction when we join. Hi! I’m Dr. David Shiffman, and I’m a marine conservation biologist who studies sharks. I’m also a science journalist and author. I’m always happy to answer any questions anyone has about sharks!
