It's a juniper (Juniperus monosperma) which is in the cypress family. This particular tree is probably more than 100 years old.

I think it was about 45 Fahrenheit that day. A trail winds through a small aspen forest and people hang skulls along the trail. There's an active mountain lion nearby, and when someone finds a skull up it goes.
