Ah, our timidity when it comes to sanctions against Israel, it's a true work of art, my friends! You could even say it's a masterclass in high diplomacy, so subtle and discreet it is. It makes you wonder if we're not just scared of breaking our pretty little fingers by pushing that « sanction » button.
Our Timidity in Action: A Peek Behind the Curtain
- Targeted sanctions, with a magnifying glass and tweezers: For years, while other countries were going all in, we were super, super selective. Recently (like, May 2024, to be precise, and even then, things aren't moving fast), we finally slapped some sanctions on certain extremist settlers involved in violence in the West Bank. But hold on! Not against the Israeli government itself, nor against the big machinery actively pushing illegal colonization. It's like punishing the small fry in organized crime without ever touching the godfathers. Very... delicate, you say? Me, I'd say it's cold as a potato in winter!
- UN resolutions, a « yes, but... » vote: At the UN, we've become masters in the art of nuance. For a long time, Canada systematically voted against or abstained on tons of resolutions criticizing Israeli actions, even those upholding fundamental principles of international law. It's like we were saying: « Yes, the settlements are illegal, but we don't want to shout it too loud, it might bother people. » Recently, we've made a small pivot, voting « yes » on more resolutions, especially those condemning the settlements. A big step... for a country that fell asleep on the path to consciousness. That's not strong, strong progress, eh!
- Trade with the settlements: Despite acknowledging the illegality of the settlements, Canada has long allowed products from these colonies to benefit from free trade agreements. It's like saying you're against theft, but you're happy to buy stolen goods if it suits you. A form of voluntary blindness that saves us the trouble of actual concrete measures. It's like we're stuck in butter, no luck!
-« Strong opposition » declarations: We're really, really good at declarations, us! « We strongly oppose, » « we are deeply concerned, » « we will not stand idly by » (in fact, yes, we often do). It's a bit like a dog barking very loudly behind a fence, but never actually biting. It makes noise, it might even impress a little, but in the end, it doesn't change much of anything. It's just smoke and mirrors, nothing more!
In short, our timid approach is so extreme it borders on absolute discretion, allowing Israel to continue its actions with complete serenity. They know full well that, on our end, the concrete consequences will remain a distant, hypothetical threat. That's the true strength of our diplomacy, isn't it? Not bad, for a country that prides itself on being so ethical!

@Legit_Spaghetti Since many years I have used #WhereIsMySurprisedFace, #sarcasm and #SarcasmButOnlyHalf to mark my sarcastically meant toots. It never stopped the replies I described. A few times I got "oh, sorry, didn't saw that", but most of the time people that want to occupy a reply thread simply ignore it anyway.
> 'Lately, it feels like some of you aren’t the techno-optimists I took you to be. You’ve been heard uttering slurs like “I’m worried about my job stability” and “I just don’t think it’s positive for humankind,” neither of which sounds remotely optimistic or techno. I’ve even heard shocking reports of teams failing to incorporate plagiarism into their processes, because—I can’t believe I have to repeat this—“it’s not helpful.”'
@breadandcircuses I guess @geerlingguy sees himself in this picture and doesn't like it!
Seriously the day I need an app to take a shit I'll go full apeshit!
... #tRump (and the #MilitaryIndustrialComplex) might really go for that.
That might even go a significant way towards solving the "trade-deficit problem."

Question - How many small government preaching billionaires does it take to solve a country's homeless problem.
Answer - None. That's a problem for the government to solve.
