Day 16 – Overcome
For this one, I’ll discuss methods of overcoming one of the greatest problems facing humanity today – the near illegibility of the challenge dice for Modiphius’ 2d20 games, specifically the Conan game.
What are challenge dice?
2d20 is the house system for many RPGS from Modiphius – Conan, John Carter of Mars, Fallout, etc. The 2d20 system uses d20s for most tasks, but for damage and other results many 2d20 games use challenge (or combat) dice. A Challenge die is a six-sided die that can return one of the following results: 1, 2, blank, or Effect.
You can of course use a regular six-sided dice, but custom challenge dice make the game flow a lot more smoothly. Thankfully, Modiphius produces custom dice sets for all of their games.
So what’s the problem? The problem is that Modiphius over-designed them a bit. The Conan dice look like crumbling stone. The Star Trek adventure dice (1st Edition only) are star-speckled. They look good, but in a fast-paced game they’re a little hard to read.

Suggested Fixes
Asking around on and offline, it’s been suggested to me I could use some of the challenge dice for other games, John Carter of Mars specifically. This will work, but buying a lot of these for all of the players can get a little pricey.
My Ugly Solution
My current idea is using some cheap blank six-sided dice and making my own legible challenge dice. I used my Silhouette paper cutter to make some templates, and drew the appropriate symbols on the dice with a black sharpie.
It’s far from perfect. There’s a bit of smearing and I’m not sure how long they’ll last. Next time I’ll try a different paint, and perhaps use some kind of varnish.
Messy but usable.
