It's delightful to see actual sunshine in the studio, but it also reminds me that I have to move the ryijy out of its path.

A thick-pile, woven, wall-hanging rug is hanging on a grey wall and has a raking beam of sunshine diagonally across its center. It is a multi-coloured rug with a central motif of an abstracted bonfire. There is a blurred mass of orange and red radiating from the centre of the composition, and it is surrounded by purple, blue, green, and pale yellow. It is almost like the bonfire is on a horizon line, with the red and purple on the top half mirrored by yellow, orange, green, and blue on the bottom

A thick-pile, vertical, woven, wall-hanging rug hanging on a white gallery wall. The rug has a furry and pixelated look under the gallery spot lights. The rug has an abstracted depiction of flames and smoke on a purple and grey background. The flames are yellow, orange, and red and they are overlapping smoke pillars in blue, purple, and grey. The flames move from the bottom of the rug to the upper right corner. It is almost as if the flames are figure walking off the image to the right.

A cropped shot of a rolled-up woven, thick-pile rug. The rolled rug shows the reverse side of the weave, with vertical lines in dark grey wool separating the lines of knotted, coloured yarn that make up the pile. The design of the rug is a climbing and curling flame motif.A hand-knotted, woven rug with a thick wool yarn pile and vibrant design depicting an abstracted orange and red flame motif with dark blue, black, grey, and light blue smoke and cloud background.A very close-up shot of the knotted wool yarn ends in a Finnish ryijy, a thick pile wool rug that is usually hung on a wall. The pile is dense and vertical, so only the ends of the yarn threads are visible, scrunched together, looking very pointillist with uneven texture. The colours are black, blue-grey, red, and orange.

A screenshot of a vertical photograph on a white, square Instagram background. In the photo is an off-white interior space with ceiling lamps, a few different kinds of chairs, and in the foreground a thick-pile, wall-hanging rug on a cream-coloured wall over a dark, wooden sideboard on thin legs. The wall-hanging rug is known as a ryijy in Finland. It has a fuzzy texture that makes the rug's design look pixelated. The colours of the rug are pale teal, dark viridian green, grey yellow and purple, on grey background. The rug design is a stylised yellow flame overlapping with the teal smoke on the grey background. Where shapes overlap, the colours change.

A very close-up detail of the wool yarn ends in a hand-knotted, dense pile rug. The yarn ends are of slightly different lengths, so there is a terrain-like texture highlighted by light coming from the bottom of the image. From the studio, a taideryijy (wall-hanging art rug) I designed and wove.

Untitled Fire Cloud (Pyrocumulus) VII, hand-knotted wool yarn on cotton warp, 2022.

Note: If you want to keep artwork (paper, canvas, textile) from becoming discoloured or faded, keep it out of direct sunlight. I will have to move this taideryijy when the open studio is over.

A close-up detail of the yarn ends in the thick pile, wall-hanging rug as the sunshine hits it. There are curving shapes made up of coloured yarn in teal, blue, violet, magenta, and pink.A diagonal sunbeam from a window highlights the texture of a thick pile wall-hanging rug. The colours are washed out in the strong sunlight, and the yarn ends make it look pixelated. The wall-hanging rug is a traditional Finnish textile, taideryijy or ryijy, made of hand-knotted wool yarn on cotton warp threads (on a loom). It has an abstracted pattern in dark teal, blue, violet, and magenta, with highlights in pink.

The background colours are pale teal and warm grey overlaid with purple shapes on the bottom of the composition and yellow-green arcing flames reaching for the top. Dark green shapes are formed by overlapping green and teal shapes.Close-up detail of yarn ends of the thick pile in various colours. Finishing up a #taideryijy I started as a demonstration piece for my kids' school spring fair that was last weekend. I got completely caught up in the prep for the event (including other organisation tasks for it) that I neglected my other projects.
