Review: Philip Glass' 'Akhnaten' is back at L.A. Opera, this time with a magnificent John Holiday

misryoum.com/us/lifestyle/revi

By my count, Philip Glass has written 28 operas, the same number as Verdi. The count is iffy because Glass pushes the boundaries between what we tend to call opera and the fuzzier idea of music theater. His first,...

Philip Glass's #Akhnaten Met rerun again reminds me of an old 'sun with rays' image when they get to the light 'pipes' during Window of Appearances.

Made around 7.12.2016 based on pic. It was originally meant for a snowflake design, but as if I wanted that when getting the idea it'd suit a sun as well. Colours & life for me.

We had old slightly warped wood at that place so that got used for bases for paintings otherwise. All semi-fitting Egyptian themes.

An arts & crafts sun made of different length rolled up book pages, forming the rays of the sun. In the middle there is a yellow wooden disk of sorts, surrounded by an orange plume of fur. The book page beams spread from that, against a background with radiating beams stretching out. Everything is watercolour painted in different colours of the sun, oranges & yellows. The same crafts project lying on a pale beige table, with a desert scene of sand dunes against a violet toned sky seen on a painting propped up further behind it on the table.

The Sahara reminiscent desert has a prominent dune in the middle, with a strong black shadow formed on its left side. Two other dunes are seen further in the back, while the foreground shows the vast scale of them through a few silhouetted trees, barely visible from the distance, akin miniatures against the sand.My painting of Egypt, with a Bedouin style rider clad in white, on a decorated Arabian horse in front of two pyramids at sunset.

A resplendent sunset sky in nigh a rainbow of colours. A dark blue stretch at the top is broken by a hint of turquoise leftmost, spreading down into a light green turning into beaming yellows and fainter oranges on the left side of the dark brown, shadowy pyramid, behind the rider in the middle of the painting.

To the right, the sky has a sliver of violet above another tiny sliver of the green above hazy dark blue clouds, mixing into yellows and lowering down into sunset reds toward the horizon. In front of that is the further off pyramid in the distance, in a more hazy, grey toned shadow colour, as if having crept closer to the night already.Another 3 paintings on those thin wooden boards, maybe some 30-40 cm wide, tho narrow otherwise. A white table underneath like in the previous picture. Two are horizontal and the 1 on the right vertical.

There is the Atacama desert or similar in bloom, with pink colours of indistinct flowers stretching off into the distance. Furthest off there are several distant hills in different green tones, with some more blue. A rolling landscape with the sky the wood's pale colour behind the pinks + natural, faded greens.

Below that is an at that time yet unfinished painting. A pale blue night sky with a full moon above beige desert-style sands and a rockier, more mountainously jagged landscape section in the middle.

The vertical image has an evening night sky right after the sunset. At the top there is a hint of the crescent moon surrounded by the darker night blues, and right at the bottom 3 black shapes that may be forested landscape or hills or something.

The lowest part of the sky above that is faint oranges like you have after the sun has set, but most of the sky in the painting is different blue tones with possibly hints of cloud shapes as you go higher.

If you can catch the recording of The Met's Akhnaten opera, do.

Especially if feeling like going to church/temple. Or if you want to appreciate the stunning visual of Akhenaten, Nefertiti + his mother Tye in front of the sun, for one.

It may all lead to teariness in any case. Trailer:

It‘s o‘clock. O‘Day. Ach Quatsch, O‘Month.

So wie , dass ich fast ein ganzes Jahr lang gehört habe. Nichts anderes.

I have The Window of Appearances from the opera #Akhnaten going through my head rn, and it’s very annoying because I forgot my headphones so I can’t listen to it until I get home.

Akhnaten is awesome, btw, and peak Philip Glass. It’s one of my favorite operas.

Uff, ich glaube, diese Oper hat mich das erste Mal in meinem Leben hypnotisiert. 😳

Well, Akhnaten is a fascinating and hypnotic theatrical experience that I'll be thinking about for a while to come. Anthony Roth Constanzo gives an extraordinary lead performance and the skills team from Improbable display some highly technical, even virtuosic, juggling prowess!

This is the first time I've seen an ENO opera at the London Coliseum since I was at school (they used to put on regular, subsided opera trips).

I didn't even know Akhnaten when I booked my ticket but I've been listening to a recording of the work since then and I absolutely love it. So excited to be seeing a performance.

I loved Phelim McDermott's work on My Neighbour Totoro and can't wait to see what he and Improbable have done here.

Popped into the Petrie Museum to get into the Ancient Egyptian mood, ready to see the ENO's Akhnaten tonight.

The #ENO’s #Akhnaten last night was great. Stunning #PhilipGlass score and I do love a good #CounterTenor. Staging and costumes up to the usual high standards. Very slow movements throughout evoked our culture’s view of Egypt as being all about unchanging ritual which in a way was the whole point. Akhnaten’s radical innovation FAILED with an instant return to the status quo ante. #opera

If you have any interest in contemporary music and staging, I urge you to see eno.org/whats-on/akhnaten/ which returns after the 2018 sell out. It’s breathtaking. It also shows what ENO can achieve, putting the current thread into sharp relief. #akhnaten #philipglass

The moment you realize that you have a legitimately good reason to assign some #PhilipGlass listening in a non-music class -- that is a good moment!

Using Glass's #Akhnaten opera in a #History of #WorldReligions
survey with hopes that it will encourage students to also think critically about stories/metanarratives of #Religion and our participation in its construction as students/scholars. We'll enjoy the main Hymn to the Sun aria but also use its presentation, along with the discussion of Akhnaten in the #AriaCode podcast and our course readings, to consider what story is being told about religion more generally -- and what other possibilities are perhaps obscured by those choices.

Trying to find ways to infuse a critical approach with some subtlety (i.e. no/few theoretical readings, minimal jargon).

The Aria Code podcast episode on the Akhnaten Hymn is one of my favorites of the series!

Delighted to hear Mark Kermode talk about how good the Philip Glass opera Akhnaten is on Take 3. I’ve also been fortunate to see this and echo his sentiments. Just when I thought that I couldn’t like him more 😊 #Wittertainment #Vanguardista #KermodeAndMayo #PhilipGlass #Akhnaten
