Joseph Plateau died #OTD in 1883.
He was one of the first people to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image. To do this, he used counterrotating disks with repeating drawn images in small increments of motion on one and regularly spaced slits in the other. He called this device of 1832 the phenakistiscope. via @wikipedia

I bought this book at a bookshop on Hollywood boulevard in the late 1990s, but the edition is from 1988. This means it was written before computers started to be used in animation*, and _boy_ how they changed things! The process is the same at its core, but a lot of the tedious 'meh' work is gone.
(*From personal memory: computer animated movies were remarkable novelties at that time, so their use was dawning.)
Milicent Patrick was the first female animator at Disney (the first credit went to Retta Scott though), but it's hard to find her animations on YouTube since she's also a pioneer in movie makeup and monster design; she created the gillman in Creature from the Black Lagoon. I'm giving you a two'fer

Mary Ellen Bute did abstract animations in the 1940s called "seeing sounds". (To me they feel very 1960s, so it's amazing she was 20yrs ahead.) Here's her 'Tarantella' from 1940.

The Brumberg sisters were among the pioneers in the Soviet animation industry and worked from 1925 to 1974. I'm impressed by the rotoscopy in this one. (See also Tsar Durandai)

Don't know who will see this (hope the right people do), but the fellow who is running a bunch of classic animation social profiles as well as the Mutt & Jeff restoration Kickstarter, Mauricio Alvarado, has started trying to issue takedowns of public domain cartoons on YouTube, claiming ownership. The dude has also exhibited other sorts of toxic behavior, and it would be best avoid his doings.
