Here’s a casting thought for Starfleet Academy raised by Discovery S5E6 Whistlespeak. . .

Was Discovery setting up for another cadet to become a recurring or regular cast member in the sixth season we’ll never see, or instead as a significant character in Starfleet Academy?

Kurtzman has recently said in interviews that the casting of ‘the kids’ remains to be done, but I’m wondering if Canadian actor Addison Holley is already locked in somehow.

There’s a running character thread this season for Tilly who feels she’s not having success reaching her students at the Academy, and one in particular is name-dropped briefly. Definitely some kind of Chekhov’s gun in that.

The problem cadet turns out to be the student who served drinks in the celebration event in the premiere. (Not putting a spoiler warning on this since there was little more context given and no resolution within the episode.)

I recognized Addison Holley as the actor serving drinks right away in the premiere but found it very odd that she was in such a minor role. So, I have been waiting for something more with her all season. At this point, she’s important for Tilly but off-screen.

Addison’s a well known, experienced actor in her early 20s who is making the transition to adult roles. She has several award nominations and wins, including Emmy nominations. She had the title role in the excellent tween sci-fi drama ‘Annedroids’ that our kids watched a decade ago. But she also had the principal role in Michelle Paradise’s independent film about conversion therapy ‘ Trapped: the Alex Cooper story.’

BTW the Wikipedia page in Addison is incorrect - she’s 24, not 38, just the right age to play a cadet. Also highly recommend ‘Annedroids’ for any who have some younger people to watch with or are up for a tween live action show. Lots of affirming content mixed in with STEAM learning and great sci-fi.

Raven Dauda is wonderful.

I first saw her work in Annedroids when w watched it with our kids.

It was a Canadian middle school kids television show originally made for TVO, and distributed outside Canada on Amazon Prime.

Annedroids was a live action STEM show that included so much representation while telling a great science fiction story about a gifted girl, the androids she built, & the friends she made and included in her projects. Gender, race, body conformity, nonbinary all calmly woven in.

Raven played the mum of the boy who was part of the trio of main character kids. She was strong and smart and provided representation in that role.

I later found out that she has an active theatre career. She won a national award for her one woman show ‘Addiction’ that was informed by her own experience and recovery.

(TV Ontario, our provincial public broadcaster has a major finder of high quality kids programming, much of which gets to the US on PBS or Nickelodeon.)
