#IOS26 regressions

Apple have stupidly removed the ability to force sync on iPads. It used to be hidden under your profile picture under collections, but at least it was there. Now it tells me that the last sync was 29 minutes ago but won’t let me tell them to sync now.

Anyone found a way around this?

My wife and I just recently learned that our first baby is on the way! What technology matters should I make sure are in order before the baby arrives? Is it finally time for the 2 of us to leave my parents Apple family and start our own to take advantage of an iCloud shared photo library (goodbye Apple One 😭)?

Listening to the conversation of headphones on the latest @atpfm Overtime brought a question to mind:
What’s your current desktop headphone setup and how recently has it changed?

@atpfm #askatp super weird AirPod bug, which seems to have been there for years… we just got an M4 MBA to share between my wife and I. I connected my AirPods Pro, everything fine. However, as I was using them with my iPhone tonight, my wife logs into her Mac account. Then my AirPods connect to her phone and are now in her iCloud account and no longer in mine. My phone even says: “Not your AirPods”. Apparently the Bluetooth chip on the MBA remembers them across Mac user accounts…

@atpfm Idea for a special episode (since this might be too broad): in the era of AI, how would you approach coding if you were starting today?
It’s getting hard to justify doing everything manually when a single prompt can produce a working solution—so what should people focus on learning?

#askatp @atpfm On the latest episode, John was talking about his us of LLM to help him solve a coding problem. As a computer science educator and Lead Judge of a state level coding competition, this fills me with a bit of dread. How should I be preparing my students for future career, while still insuring academic integrity. Too often my students try to use these tools to avoid the hard work of learn how the code works. I worried there will soon, like this year, be a time when I can not tell effort my students put into their work, but at the same time recognize his will be important tools in the future work place.

Y’all talk about flat panel TVs but do you have any opinions about video projectors?

At our house we use a ceiling-mounted Benq that uses DLP tech. A receiver acts as the AV switcher. Mostly we stream from the Apple TV, but also from a PS5 or a Blu-ray player. Some reasons we avoided standard TVs were to avoid the terrible UIs and spy/snooping tech built into consumer TVs. It’s worked quite well for over a decade but I think the time to replace it is coming up. Dumb TVs FTW!

@atpfm Do any of you use iPhone mirroring on your macs? Sometimes I attempt to use it to interact with a notification that originated from my iPhone, but I am always greeted with an error saying that it's unable to connect, that the connection timed out, or that my phone is currently in use and I need to re-lock it. I've had a success rate below 10% with this feature since its introduction, and the only solution I've found is restarting both devices (ugh). Is it just a me issue?

@atpfm Will the skyrocketing cost of memory (and the likely price increases at Apple) cause John to accelerate his purchase of a (presumably memory-packed) Mac Studio? Right now the Apple prices for memory are actually reasonable. 😅

@atpfm Only use my (old) Apple Watch to trigger iPhone Camera. That is, I ONLY wear my Apple Watch when intending to take family photos.

I've never heard of anyone ever actually using it for that. Ever.

Any of you use it as a iPhone Camera trigger? (And tiny viewfinder?)

@atpfm inspired by Casey's brief mention of cell phone plans on Downstream: have any of you seriously looked into MVNOs recently? I've been getting frustrated by how much I'm paying AT&T for my relatively lightweight needs. I'm still on a legacy data capped plan and don't even use all of the data in that. The "unlimited" plans are all even MORE expensive. So the MVNOs are looking attractive. But I don't know if I'd regret it (and/or if my wife would get mad at me)...

@atpfm why does @siracusa still use a tri-fold wallet? I carry a card holder with a little bit of spot for cash that holds 5 cards, I can get rid of at least two of those for what i need daily thanks to Apple Pay and such. Theories:

Am I the only one who is driven insane by the fact that Messages for macOS does not have a "Send" button in the UI? Maddening! I drag & drop a photo into a message thread and then have to hit the enter key to send. Who removed that send button and WHY??!

#askatp @atpfm today I had two encounters with Attitude Siri… first, I asked her to “Play my Station” to get it to play my Apple Music generated playlist based on my taste (one of the dynamic radio station) after I already got it to do successfully and started playing a track (I wanted to generate a new random one)… it just replied “No!” and that is it. Did it ever happen to you?

@siracusa @marcoarment @atpfm On Contact Cards: You do know that you can display contacts from multiple accounts (iCloud, Gmail, IMAP accounts, etc) in your Contacts App, right? This creates multiple contacts from the same person, but then, you can link them to appear as one. And when you change some info in one of them, it updates every single linked account. This solves John’s iCloud-Gmail situation.

@siracusa Hi! I’d like to pick your brain about whether it’s a good idea to use
- a dedicated Mac
- a dedicated Apple ID
to host a local copy of an iCloud Shared Photo Library. I recall you saying your wife’s iMac contains your family photos; did you encounter any issues with that setup?
Thanks in advance and feel free to make this an question if you want to talk about it on the show.
