I am planning on purchasing a MacBook Pro, but they don't come cheap (plus I need a 4TB hard drive...). I got unexpected bills recently so I have to put it off. I was waiting on M5 models and revisit the decision then. But I just realized that these will come with macOS Tahoe and it's ugly and I strongly disagree with the design principles. (My main iPhone will be on iOS 18 for very long time as well)
Should I stretch my wallet now and stay on Sequoia for as long as possible?

#askatp On AI training costs: AI companies love to say that AI training is like how writers and artists absorb the work they build on, and should thus also be freely available. But writers and artists largely pay for the works they absorb over their lifetime. They buy books, or the library does. They buy movie and concert and exhibition tickets. Their education gets paid for. They never just suck it all in for free. So why shouldn't LLMs pay for their education?

@atpfm #askatp I keep hearing @siracusa discussinf panels and refresh rates and brightness when discussing TVs, but what I really want is a Siracusa-depth review on the various garbage OSes that TVs now encumber you with. If I’m going to plug an AppleTV into it and never change that input over to their internal stuff, and never connect the TV to the internet, which OSes will stay out of my way, and which ones will fight me tooth and nail?

@atpfm #askatp I’m an old-school programmer hobbyist who learned BASIC in the 80’s, got a Computer Science degree in the 90's, and mostly wrote lots of tools for administration, quick problem solving, and little personal / work apps. Though I can probably program in anything, I fear my mind still thinks in Perl 5 and Python 2.7 (and Objective-C where objects are concerned).

I often hear you talking about the latest features in modern languages like Swift. As I embark on a long-term Part-time Personal Programming Project, what's your advice for how this old dog can learn new tricks? Concurrency, protocols, promises, actors, and everything else -- what are the most important new concepts I should learn, and why? Can you suggest tutorials or other references, or a DIY project or course that'll help me learn more directly? (like many, I learn best by doing)

@atpfm feedback on drywall anchors. I am a massive fan of Hillman "WallDog" drywall anchor screws. I can't think of a time that they have failed me and they are basically a normal screw with extra wide threads. They work equally well in studs as drywall, which is nice for consistency. #askATP - this might sound sacrilegious to the ‘no modes’ ethos of modern OS design but could a “pro” mode and a “standard” mode toggle be the answer to ipadOS’s interface conundrum and iPad’s identity crisis?

One as simple and clutter-free as the phone and the other packed with features, options, and interface options/window metal, perhaps? Standard Mode on by default on the mini, iPad, and Air, Pro Mode the default on the iPad Pro only. Am I mad to think this?

@atpfm #askatp With Apple willing to burn their reputation and recently even lie under oath in court (!), why should we trust their “commitment” to user privacy when revenue decisions (especially services) appear to trump all other concerns? Why wouldn’t they undermine their privacy commitments to achieve revenue goals?

I recently bought a telescope, but the Finder is a problem.
If I have a folder with 2000 images (which is common), loading them into a stack in an application takes ages. I get a ghost image and then they ‘appear’. I have to keep scrolling down until all the images are rendered.
This is on an M4 Mac mini Pro with 64GB RAM and 4TB SSD.

Is this APFS-related or because Finder needs a major update?
