Microsoft Confirms Windows Server Issues After August 2024 Update
Microsoft has acknowledged and addressed a significant issue causing Windows Server 2019 systems to experience slowdowns, boot problems, and freezes after the August 2024 security update was installed. This issue, affecting servers in various enterprise environments, was linked to the cumulative update KB5041578, released on August 13, 2024.
What Happened?
After installing the August 2024 Windows security update, many Windows Server 2019 devices started to slow down, become unresponsive, and use a lot of CPU power. This was mainly due to problems with Cryptographic Services, according to Microsoft. Additionally, it was reported that antivirus software, particularly the Windows Defender service, contributed to the issue by scanning certain Windows update files, causing high disk usage and further slowing down the system.
Symptoms to Watch For
Administrators have reported several symptoms in affected systems, including:
- High CPU usage
- Increased disk latency and disk usage
- Slowed down or unresponsive operating system and applications
- Failure of the Cryptographic Services (CryptSVC) service to start
- Booting into a black screen
- Slow boot times
- System freezes or hangs
These issues are more common in enterprise environments, so users with Home or Pro editions of Windows are less likely to be affected.
Fixes and Solutions
Microsoft has rolled out a fix through Known Issue Rollback (KIR), a feature in Windows that reverses problematic non-security updates. Admins managing enterprise devices must deploy the Known Issue Rollback Group Policy for Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019 to fix the issue. The Group Policy can be found under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates. After setting it up, a system restart is required to apply the changes.
Once Microsoft releases a future update with the fix included, administrators will no longer need to use this Group Policy to resolve the problem.
Other Related Issues
In addition to these server issues, Microsoft also confirmed that the August 2024 updates are causing problems with Linux booting on dual-boot systems when Secure Boot is enabled. This further emphasizes the need for administrators to be cautious when applying updates in mixed OS environments.
