Austrian American photographer Ernst Haas was born in Vienna in 1921. Working as a photo journalist Haas was offered a staff position with Life magazine, but in a letter to an editor he refused the offer saying “What I want is to stay free, so that I can carry out my ideas... I don’t think there are many editors who could give me the assignments I give myself...”. He passed away in 1986
