Today in Labor History June 6, 1937: A general strike by 12,000 autoworkers and others in Lansing, MI shut down the city for a month in what was to become known as the city’s “Labor Holiday.” A judge had recently imposed an injunction on workers, making it illegal for them to picket, blockade or interfere in the operations of Capital city Wrecking Company. The workers ignored the injunction were arrested, including the wife of the auto workers local union president, leaving their three children at home unattended. In response, they called a General Strike. Flying squadrons of out-town workers came in solidarity to support the General Strike. They were successful in forcing negotiations that got all the prisoners released. However, the strike continued in East Lansing, where anti-labor university students battled with workers, dumping some of their cars into the river.

Today in Labor History April 20, 1948: United Auto Workers President Walter Reuther was shot and seriously wounded by would-be assassins while he was eating dinner. It permanently impaired his right arm. He survived and ultimately died in a plane crash in 1970 under suspicious circumstances. Reuther also survived an attempted kidnapping in April, 1938, while his brother Victor was shot and nearly killed by police in 1949. The UAW headquarters was also bombed in 1949. Both Walter and Victor were again nearly killed in a small private plane near Dulles Airport. Despite this history of attempts on his life, virtually no media addressed the possibility that his actual death may have been an assassination.

The new wage lifts two-thirds of the workforce above Mexico’s family , & above Mexico’s of about $1.71 per hour. A proposed nationwide shift to a 40-hour workweek without a reduction in pay (Mexico’s workweek is currently capped at 48 hours) would also mark a significant advance.

#DemocracyNow: “What About the Capitalists?”: Autoworkers in U.S., Mexico Call for Solidarity, Not Divisive Tariffs

Story April 08, 2025

"As workers brace for uncertainty and fallout from #Trump’s #tariffs, we hear from two #autoworkers, one in #Mexico and one in the United States. Israel Cervantes, founder of the National Independent Union for Workers in the Automotive Industry in Mexico, calls for unions across #NorthAmerica to unite against the tariffs, which have already led to layoffs from auto manufacturers. In the U.S., autoworker and UAW member Sean Crawford joins Democracy Now! on his work break to respond to the rhetoric and impact of the tariffs. 'They are always harping on foreigners, foreigners, foreigners. But what about the #capitalists? says Crawford, who urges international solidarity against #corporations’ attempts to sow division among #exploited #workers. “This nationalistic viewpoint has not been working for us and has resulted in a lot of these layoffs,' he says. 'I want to see us grow together as a #WorkingClass.'"

DONALD TRUMP'S TARIFFS HAVE PITTED AUTOWORKER UNIONS AGAINST EACH OTHER "In trade terms, the key point is that Canadians buy far more American vehicles than they build: Canada sends about 1.5 million vehicles to the U.S., but purchases about two million new vehicles a year. Canada now represents a big market, and Canadians won't keep buying more than they build if Americans keep squeezing them out of good jobs." thestar.com/politics/political

“The simpleminded idea that this is going to create some boom in the U.S. doesn't match with the risk profile.
