Heh. From my facebook feed

Pilot (EAT300): "Uh, Heathrow Tower, EAT300, we're going around. Just... a bit bouncy on that last one."

ATC (LHR Tower): "EAT300, roger, maintain runway heading, climb to 3,000 feet. 'Bouncy' noted. Any... concerns?"

Pilot (EAT300): "Negative concerns, Tower, just felt like we kissed the runway a little too passionately. Might need to check for lipstick on the aft fuselage."

ATC (LHR Tower): (A beat of silence) "EAT300, copy that. We'll have ground staff on standby with a magnifying glass for said lipstick. Do you require any assistance or emergency services on stand-by for your next approach?"

Pilot (EAT300): "Negative, Tower. Just a bruised ego and possibly a slightly flattened tail. We'll set up for another approach, maybe a bit more... gently this time. Requesting vectors for Runway 27L."

ATC (LHR Tower): "EAT300, vectors for 27L approved. Perhaps aim for a 'peck on the cheek' landing this time, rather than a full-on embrace. Traffic on final is a British Airways A380, he's coming in like he's landing on clouds. Might want to take notes."

Pilot (EAT300): "Haha, understood, Tower. We'll try to emulate the graceful whale. EAT300's just a bit... excitable today."

ATC (LHR Tower): "Excitable noted. EAT300, you are cleared to land Runway 27L. Wind 260 at 8 knots. And, EAT300, consider it a personal challenge from Tower: no more romantic encounters with the tarmac."

Pilot (EAT300): "Challenge accepted, Tower! Preparing for the most platonic landing in EAT300 history. Wish us luck!"

Wow. From my facebook

ATC (Approach): "Delta 447, continue descent, report established on the localizer. Weather is bumpy, visibility five miles."

Delta 447 (Pilot): "Roger, descending, 447. Uh, Tower, a quick question: Do we need to report when the fuselage attempts to perform a close-up impression of a sparkler?"

ATC: (A pause, then a slightly strained sigh) "Delta 447, are you reporting an actual lightning strike?"

Delta 447: "Affirmative, Tower. Look, the plane's fine, we're all fine, but judging by the flash, I think we just got a free, very large, and somewhat scorchy airbrush tattoo right on the nose. We're thinking of calling it 'The Bolt.'"

ATC: "Delta 447, disregard the localizer for a moment. Declare your intentions. Do you have any system abnormalities, or are you just... having a branding meeting?"

Delta 447: "We've got a couple of minor electrical hiccups, Tower, nothing we can't handle. But the real concern is the appearance. Can you call the gate agent and ask them to prep a small velvet rope and maybe a sign? We’re coming back as an exhibit."

ATC: "Roger, Delta 447. Turn left heading zero-niner-zero, descend and maintain three thousand. Expect vectors back to the airport. And 447, just advise the passengers that the new 'scorched paint job' is merely an advanced anti-static feature."

Delta 447: "Will do, Tower. But I'm filing a complaint with the atmosphere. They clearly don't respect the Delta corporate color scheme.

I so want to find the clip. The following is taken from my Facebook. I really commend the control tower and the pilot for maintaining professional tones throughout the whole situation.

Tower (ATC): "Delta 454, good morning. Maintain two thousand. Report established on the localizer."

Delta 454 (Captain Leo, sounding cheerful but with a noticeable whistling noise): "Morning, Tower. Delta 454 maintaining two thousand, established... WHOOSH... established on the localizer."

Tower: "Delta 454, we're picking up some interference on your transmission. Did you just say you were 'wooshing' on the localizer?"

Delta 454: "Negative, Tower. That's actually just the sound of the wind. We had a little... a little spontaneous architectural modification back there. Got clipped by a lightning bolt that was apparently very, very specific about its target."

Tower (A pause, then his voice drops a bit): "Delta 454, clarify. Are you reporting a lightning strike and damage to the aircraft?"

Delta 454: "Affirmative, Tower. And when I say 'damage,' I mean my side cockpit window is no longer a window. It's an ultra-premium, high-speed, direct-air-intake system. My first officer is currently wearing a half-gallon of melted hail on his face and is trying to read the checklist with his eyes closed."

Tower (Trying to maintain professional calm): "Delta 454, declare your emergency if necessary. Do you require immediate vectors for landing?"

Delta 454: "Ah, no emergency yet, Tower. We're flying fine. Just... a little breezy up here. I'm going to need to request a Gate C3 and a full maintenance crew, and if it’s not too much trouble, can you ask Delta Ops to meet us with a new uniform for Dave, a roll of duct tape, and a really good hairbrush? My tie is currently stuck to the ceiling."

Tower (Sighs): "Roger, Delta 454. Expect vectors for a straight-in approach to Runway 27. I'll have the emergency services on standby as a precaution."

Delta 454: "Copy that, Tower. And hey, thanks for the quick service. You guys are a real lifesaver. Now if you'll excuse me, I think I just lost a pen. It's probably in Georgia by now.

"In the early 1960s, United Air Lines brought new jet airliners into service providing unprecedented speed, comfort, and efficiency. With the Douglas DC-8 and the Boeing 720, coast-to-coast travel time was less than six hours. The interiors of the new jets were far more spacious and quiet than any of the propeller-driven airliners. With more interior space, greater attention was paid to inflight amenities such as elaborate, multi-course meal service, inflight movies, and individualized air conditioning controls. Have you ever flown on a DC-8?
