Today's #PhotoOfTheDay is from the Great Wall at Badaling and illustrates just one of the challenges for the builders of the wall, the geography. Walls on flat ground are easy enough, on near vertical slopes not so much. Be interesting to know if there was some structure between the two sections back when it was built.

A section of the Great Wall at Badaling illustrates some of the challenges for the builders. The wall enters the frame from the left and crests a rocky hill, where there is a small tower fort, it changes direction and comes towards us and begins to descend and then stops as there is a cliff like drop. Below it the wall continues with a staircase so you have to wonder if there was some, perhaps wooden, structure that linked the two parts and allowed defenders to bridge the gap in safety.
In another country perhaps a wily coyote would have painted a tunnel at the top of the staircase to provide access to the wall above!
