A cargo ship the size of the Newnew Polar Bear in no way is affected by the weather that was present during the #Balticconnector incident. Such weather is perfectly normal for the area and poses no trouble for shipping.
Likely this is some attempt to skirt liability or just some poor attempt to save face. The Finnish and Estonian officials are also looking into the possibility that the incident was a deliberate act. I'm more inclined to believe in Hanlon's razor here: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity"
China admits cargo ship Newnew Polar Bear damaged #Balticconnector pipeline in 2023-10-08. Chinese authorities stated that the damage caused by the ship was accidental, resulting from a severe storm.
According to Finnish Meteorological Institute at the time of the incident (2023-10-08) the area had wind gust of 15 m/s, with average wind speed being much lower. At midnight 2023-10-08 the significant wave height was 2,5 m.
In Finland average wind speed of 21 m/s or higher within 10 minute window is considered a storm.

🧵 1/ The interconnection #EstLink2 used for power transfer between #Finland and #Estonia was disconnected suddenly on January 26th just after midnight local time.
An investigation regarding the disconnect has been launched. It's currently unknown why the disconnect happened and if there was an outside factor regarding it similar to the #Balticconnector last year.
