Chaos looms over EU entry points as new border checks take effect
Overview of the EU's New Digital Border System EES and Its Implementation
Starting Sunday, most non-EU travelers entering the Schengen area will undergo biometric registration through the EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES), which requires a facial photograph and fingerprint scans, replacing passport stamping. This system aims to speed up border processing and enhance securi... [More info]
OpenID Foundation whitepaper exposes critical AI agent security gaps

New guidance aimed at agent developers, architects, standards bodies and enterprises throws doubt on security standards around simple AI agent scenarios, claiming AI agents can not work independently, across different companies, or handle complex permission sharing.

"Facial recognition technology is increasingly used in airports, police investigations and sports venues.
Now Amazon’s Ring says it’s putting facial recognition for the first time into its home security doorbells and video cameras. It’s intended to identify your sister, a neighbor or other people you know.
While the feature will be optional for Ring device owners, privacy advocates say it’s unfair that wherever the technology is in use, anyone within sight will have their faces scanned to determine who’s a friend or stranger.
The Ring feature is “invasive for anyone who walks within range of your Ring doorbell,” said Calli Schroeder, senior counsel at the consumer advocacy and policy group Electronic Privacy Information Center. “They are not consenting to this.”"

Normalizing Facial Recognition Technology and The End of Obscurity
Woodrow Hartzog, Evan Selinger, and Judy Hyojoo Rhee
"This article argues that facial recognition technology is the most dangerous surveillance tool ever invented. Given the unique threats this morally suspect tool poses to privacy, civil liberties, human flourishing, and democracy, the only appropriate response is a ban. To justify our position, we explain why facial recognition is distinctive among biometrics, clarify how even seemingly benign and positive uses of the technology can trigger dangerous normalization dynamics, and pinpoint why current United States laws (with reverberations in the EU's AI Act) are designed to accelerate a slippery slope that makes mass surveillance nearly inevitable. Our most fundamental contribution lies in demonstrating how the concept of "obscurity" connects all three arguments: facial recognition algorithms technologically eviscerate obscurity, normalization psychologically undermines it, and the law doctrinally abandons it-a perfect storm that only prohibition can stop."

@signalapp "We urge Germany to be wise and to stand firm in its principles. We cannot let history repeat itself, this time with bigger databases and much much more sensitive data." This is vital since the actual damages and bodily harm caused by invasive surveillance have yet to be fully understood. @DaveMWilburn #TLDR: NEVER EVER USE #BIOMETRICS NOR SET IT UP ANYWHERE!!!
@aa @DaveMWilburn also never ever use #biometrics for any security at all and setup "Wiping-PINs" wherever possible!

i was a very early adopter of online-ness. i was in the early times of Woolies online shopping, long long before Coles got theirs, & when Woolies' initial online presence was still small & hesitant.
many years earlier, i was early into ANZ Bank's online banking; they were the first, or one of, & the great majority of the populace were still doing physical banking, for a really long time after i'd been banking online for yonks.
a bit later, when Fairfax's SMH began their tentative steps into online news, running off a single pc in a basement, i enthusiastically began consuming it that way. none of their strayan msm competitors had similar, for another coupla years.
so, i like doing my doings online, it clicks with me, & i valued it before massive mainstreamness happened.
however, i have never, & will never [voluntarily], provide my biometric data for anything to anyone. i will drop or never start using any service that requires it. when i learned, several years ago, that nsw govt was introducing digital licences & pics, i gave my car away & let my licence expire.
you are not getting my fingerprints & face, you buncha bastards.
i am gobsmacked that so many peeps are so focused on convenience that they pay no regard at all to privacy & security. your face & prints databases WILL get hacked, your data WILL be stolen. Wotcha gonna do then, you fools? 😮🙄🤦♀️

"Integrating facial analysis and recognition tools into the workplace can have deleterious effects on employees. A 2023 assessment of feedback shared with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy indicated that digital surveillance in the workplace creates a sense of distrust among employees, making them feel constantly monitored and leading to a decline in productivity and morale. Workers also noted that digital surveillance could limit unionizing, deterring this type of behavior in the workplace. There were also employee concerns about data privacy and how the data collected would be used.
Employers should think twice about implementing facial analysis and recognition software in the workplace. Not only is the type of technology prone to bias, but it can also erode employee trust and morale. If organizations have this type of technology in place already, they should request more information from the vendor about audits and what accountability measures are in place to ensure accuracy and mitigate bias. Employees should know their rights and there must be transparency around how data is collected, stored, and used. We must deeply consider the future we are creating when our face holds the key to whether we praised or punished."
EU's New Biometric Entry System: What It Means for Travelers and Border Operations
The European Union’s new entry-exit system (EES) will soon require non-EU citizens to register biometric data—faces and fingerprints—before entering the Schengen area. Starting from October 12, travelers will need to complete this process at each border crossing, including airports, ports, and train... [More info]
"On Friday, IT security expert and hacker Janik Besendorf, with the support of the Chaos Computer Club (CCC), filed a lawsuit against the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) at the Administrative Court in Wiesbaden. He accuses the authority of unlawfully processing his biometric facial data and presumably also passing it on to third parties for trial runs of biometric facial recognition.
According to the CCC, the lawsuit specifically targets a cooperation between the BKA and the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research (IGD). The Wiesbaden police authority is alleged to have misused nearly 5 million facial data records from the Inpol-Zentral (Z) police database and transferred them to the IGD without legal basis. The images were used as test material for four new BKA facial recognition systems.
Besendorf, whose facial photo was entered into the INPOL-Z database in 2018 after being processed by the identification service on charges of trespassing, feels that he has been unwittingly turned into a test subject. According to Netzpolitik.org, Besendorf wants to wait until the proceedings are concluded before potentially requesting that his photos be deleted. This is to prevent evidence from being destroyed."
