A Buddhist altar in the background has more than thirty Kannon (Kuanyin) statues, but thy are blocked by many dozens of wooden slats. The slats looks something like fence posts, and are being stored here for a few days before being used in this year's bon dance. Bon dances are something like street parties to celebrate people we miss.

FYI, obon or bon dance is a celebration of our ancestors, and a way to thank them. It nearly always involves Japanese folk music and some taiko drumming, and is often a great source of fairground style food. Woot!

It's that time of year again: #obon, AKA #BonDance season, when Buddhists of many traditions honor their ancestors. UK friends, these events look something like morris dancers :-) If you're on the Bid Island of #Hawaii, be sure to visit Daifukuji Zen #Buddhism temple's bon dance on July 13. If you've never participated, there are practice sessions on June 4, 11, & 25, and on July 2, 4, 9, & 11. Plenty of fun and #taiko drums!
