Finished reading this last night and genuinely want to make 🔥 everyone🔥 read it. I don't have kids and still got a lot out of it. It's short and sweet and practical. Highly highly recommend.

(The author also hosts a podcast, Fifteen Minutes of Fascism, that's well worth checking out.)

This is a map of the 1000 most mentioned books on Hacker News.

The creator scraped 20k posts related to books and reading from Algolia. They used GPT-4o mini to parse the posts and extract references to books, along with the opinions of the posters. These were collated into descriptions, which were then embedded using OpenAI's model. The embeddings were projected into 2D using UMAP and clustered with HDBSCAN.

Thanks to fellow author Daniel Lorn for taking the time to read and review "Hostile Takeover." This "story single," which is available via Amazon & Audible, is also included in my latest novel-length book "8: Tales of The Big Men from The Nod/Wells Timelines."

My latest read: "Black Cat Bones" by Brian Bowyer - See my Goodreads review for details but if you're looking for something brief that pushes a lot of different genre-fiction buttons in interesting ways, this one's definitely worth a look. 👍

I'm on holiday, so I'm reading more than usual.
I'm on an @aptshadow binge.

I've done Service Model (a while ago, highly recommend), Shards of Earth, Elder Race, And Put Away Childish Things, and now I'm on Firewalkers

None I wouldn't recommend really. Our Adrian rarely disappoints!

First book of Shadows of the Apt is ready to go for the plane home this weekend...

I’m reading Ode to Salonika, edited by Renée Levine Melammed, which presents the komplas composed by Bouena Sarfatty in memory of her destroyed community of Salonika. After background chapters on pre-Shoah Salonika life in the twentieth century, I have finally reached the bilingual presentation of the poems themselves (Ladino and English on facing pages). I’m surprised by how much Ladino I can understand. Each poem is composed to the health of a community member, most of whom were murdered. #Bookstodon #Shoah #Ladino #Books #BookRec #History #Poetry #Mazeldon #AmReading

Pleased to share this thoughtful review of my latest book, "8: Tales of The Big Men from The Nod/Wells Timelines" by Tony Travis, a fellow speculative-fiction author. Follow the link for the full text and be sure to check out his site. It's rather swank. 🙂👍

No coding. No writing experience needed.

Just your idea — big or small — transformed into a novel.

A gift for a friend.
A story for your child.
The book no one else will write… until now.

I'd love recommendations for fun baby and toddler books: give me your best diverse books!

I want LGBTQ+ characters, disabled people, people of different skin colours, polycules, stories from other cultures...

Basically I want our kid to grow up with a broad reference base. 📚 I want them to love books and stories!

Recommendations encouraged!

I'll scout out our library first but these will likely go on a wishlist.

Libraries support authors! If you can't find a book, request it! And if all else fails, ask your favorite indie author if they might have a free copy for you. 🥰

HAPPY MAY and happy reading!!! 💖

#BookRec ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Internet Con by @pluralistic

Ever since I was a teen and started to use/think critically about #technology , I've been a fan of Cory Doctorow. One of my favourites back in the day was Pirate Cinema, and it instilled in me a kind of ethos that is brought to light in this new book. That is to say, I read this as a kind of manifesto.

And since you're all here on the #fediverse , I'd bet you gain something from reading this.

I got a proof copy of the new version of "Culture is Bad for You: Inequality in the Cultural and Creative Industries" (now available!) and I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

If you work in culture in ANY way at all in the UK, you have to read this. It's actually a wonderful read because it's been written by researchers who write like humans.

It's also, y'know, fascinating and really important.

Get it here: manchesteruniversitypress.co.u

A white woman's hand holding a book in the sunshine, against a backdrop of grass and little yellow flowers.

The book cover is of a white wall, a wooden floor, and one of those velvet rope type set-ups you find in museums.

The wall has been spray painted in pink with the title: "Culture is bad for you."

Other text on the cover reads:

Orian Brook, Dave O'Brien and Mark Taylor
Revised and updated edition
