I recently finished reading Richard Wollheim's "Painting As An Art".

I found much of it stimulating in the close attention paid to particular pictures and thought provoking with regard to his theory of "seeing in" as the way to understand our perception of paintings.

On the other hand, his use of psychoanalytic theory left me with questions.

Surprisingly, his use of this theory reminded of some recent reading of mine in evolutionary psychology. Both Wollheim and the evolutionary psychologists stress the significance of a common human nature and are inclined to downplay the importance of systems of symbols or culture in general.

I do think that a substantive concept of human nature makes sense, and I am open to the possibility of evolutionary psychology and psychoanalytical theory contributing to an understanding of of human nature.

Altogether less agreeable to me is the tendency of these theories to smuggle in a social ontology in which culture is merely the creation of atomized individuals. One can believe in the evolved nature of the mind and allow for the possibility of certain kinds of psychic forces at work in the individual without denying the importance, still less the existence, of social facts. Thinking about languages as at once learned and used by individuals but also existing as entities external to those individuals is helpful here.

Weebles wobble, but they don't fall down!

I wonder if this cute critter could have been an inspiration for the Bile Demon from Dungeon Keeper or the Oracle Envoy from Elden Ring.

Two character portaits I made for The Matter of Being.

Meet Victor and Mohammed! Two of the first human characters you are going to meet in the game.

commission for my dear close friend Gene

"On a clear autumn day, the story goes, you can see Ys from the Watchman's Tower. I don't know whether that's true. But on a clear day in Numa... you would see the City Unbuilt.
"Numa, the shortest season, the labyrinth season, when the year loses its way, when Time is a river and Memory a winged bird. In Numa, oddities ripen in the gardens of the Isle - unexpected visitors arrive - memory departs.

"What better time for a picnic in the moors by the sea?

"A cup of witching tisane, the taste like a lingering kiss at the mouth's edge. A dish of walls-of-ys, for doors can open to more than sight.

"Refine what is; recall what remains."

Had a lot of fun making this Book of Hours themed piece, leaning on the amazing art style of the game 💜

a visually striking image with a distant citadel on a hill silhouetted against a bright magenta sky. in the foreground, two characters in period semi-formal dress sit on a grassy hillside on an ornate rug, enjoying a quaint picnic that features tea in a flask, a plate of mushroom toast, and a very large pear and meringe pudding.

everything is themed around the video game Book of Hours

fashion is hard when you have no idea what you’re doing and are just making it up as you go along based on vague ideas of what was “in” 100 years ago in a fictional historical setting.

Al Overview
In Book of Hours, language skills are developed primarily through built-in
language skills acquired from visitors and through the Hush House, rather than
through traditional language cards or flashcards. While flashcards might be
useful for vocabulary acquisition, the game emphasizes listening and talking to
develop more comprehensive language proficiency. ¢

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Built-in Languages:

The game features mechanics where languages can be learned from random visitors who appear throughout the game, and through interactions within the Hush House These interactions are likely to involve conversations, which encourages the player to actively use and understand the language in context.

Limited Role of Flashcards:

While flashcards (like those used in Anki) can be a helpful tool for vocabulary
acquisition, according to a language leaming blog, the game's focus is on developing broader language skills through interaction and immersion.

Importance of Context:

A language learning blog says, true language proficiency involves understanding howwords are used in different contexts and being able to use them actively in conversation. This is something that flashcards alone cannot fully achieve.

Prioritizing Listening and Talking:

Yourawesomememory.com suggests, language learning should involve more than just memorization. Active listening and talking are crucial for developing fluency and understanding the nuances of a language.

My favourite tune from sound track is Sea Holly. To me it suggests ineffable mystery and feels very fitting for the theme of the game.

Hey, if you love of Cultist Simulator or Book of Hours, check out The Matter of Being.
You play as a sinister entity trying to gain access to the mortal realm by striking faustian bargains.

Please share and wishlist it, so we can get funding. I will make lots of awesome art for it, promise. :)

I’m starting to get the hang of how to do things in #BookOfHours, but I’m still missing one key ability: How to make more ink. The game takes place in early 20th century, so enlarging your hoard of books involves a lot of letter-writing. I’m beginning to suspect that the single vial you start with was supposed to be used to order more. But on the other hand, the game doesn’t seem to have a failure state, so there’s probably an another way. I have a small garden, but no relevant skills.

#BookOfHours is from the same software company that made the Cultist Simulator. While imminent doom is a key mechanic in the latter, the former is much more laid-back. You find yourself on the beach, apparently a survivor from a shipwreck. You establish yourself in the village and begin settling into the old manor at the tip of the peninsula. I haven't gotten into the occult yet, but I expect it's coming.

A screenshot from Book of Hours. It depicts a stylized map of the small Cornwall village of Brancrug. It's located at a small peninsula. There are about half a dozen houses, some roads and electricity poles. A road leads west further into the peninsula. A forest establishes the eastern border of the village, with the Atlantic Ocean on north, west and south sides. The peninsula is buffeted by winds.

I never needed DataView until I started trying to use Obsidian to track my information and progress in #BookOfHours and it became invaluably useful.

Does any one of you have “Cultist Simulator” and/or “BOOK OF HOURS” on Steam and would be willing to give me their cards? I’m only missing a few of them.

Boost appreciated.
