Alex Chan: Building a personal archive of the web, the slow way . “I’ve worked on web archives in a professional setting, but this one is strictly personal. This gives me more freedom to make different decisions and trade-offs. I can focus on the pages I care about, spend more time on quality control, and delete parts of a page I don’t need – without worrying about institutional […]

The screenshots included make it look like the photos are in a DAM or Drupal system? If this was just used for publishing photos, but the photos are preserved elsewhere, it might not be quite as bad as it sounds. 26000 photos sounds incredibly small for DoD, but especially for #borndigital photos, these might really be the only copies. Anyone know more? #digipres 3/3

Poynter: As websites disappear, link rot threatens journalism. One Stanford fellow is working on a fix. “[Brandon] Tauszik discovered one of his projects, Syria Street, had disappeared due to link rot — the gradual decay of URLs and websites as they become broken, inaccessible or deleted over time. As a journalism fellow with the The Starling Lab for Data Integrity at Stanford, Tauszik has […]

A small exercise in Digital Archaeology.
Un Dimanche aux Puces (1994)

Beginning of the 90’s, I was experimenting a lot with interactive multimedia using Macromind Director, video and my mac.
I programmed this small linear composition exploiting stamp size quicktime videos, trying to do a video montage without a video editor.
It shows my Sunday walks to the flea market in Brussels and to a nearby popular cafe (La Puce)
End of 2024 I was very upset that so many popular pubs have closed in Brussels (Daringman, Clef d’Or, la Brocante,…), so I decided to resurrect this 1994 project as a video, an homage to Martine the owner of La Puce and the now dead Daringman.
More explanations about the resurrection process in the text on Youtube.
