A black and white photograph features a young boy standing on wooden planks, with one foot raised. He is wearing dark overalls that appear to be made of denim or similar sturdy fabric. His hands are placed firmly on his hips as he looks directly at the camera with a smile.

The setting appears rural, likely in an agricultural environment given the barn-like structure in the background and visible wooden beams supporting it. The boy's stance is confident and suggests playfulness, possibly indicating that this photo was taken during leisure time or while engaging in playful activities around his home.

This photograph captures a moment of childhood joy and carefree energy against a backdrop indicative of rural life, likely taken by Dorothea Lange for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) program. The image reflects the era's emphasis on documenting American lives through photography during the Great Depression.

#YubaCo #Calif #second #California #theGreatDepression #America #photography #DorotheaLange

The image is a black and white photograph showing two men standing on what appears to be an unfinished wooden structure, possibly the framework of a house or mobile dwelling. The man in front wears a dark suit with a light-colored shirt and hat, looking down towards his hands which are occupied by something small and indistinct, suggesting he might be working or inspecting it closely.

The second man stands on top of the structure's frame, partially peeking over its edge while leaning against one side. He is dressed in work attire including a jacket, pants, boots, and a hat; his posture suggests restfulness as he grasps onto the wooden beams with both hands.

Both men exhibit signs of hard labor or weariness. The background reveals an open outdoor environment which seems to be under construction or disrepair. There's no visible vegetation close by indicating that they might be in rural or semi-rural areas, possibly during a time when such structures were common for temporary housing as suggested by the caption mentioning California and 1936.

The image carries historical significance reflecting socio-economic conditions of its period, specifically related to agricultural laborers who may have been part of the Great Depression era's migratory workers in America.

Calipatria, Imperial Valley. In FSA (Farm Security Administration) emergency migratory labor camp. Left Oklahoma December 11, 1937 with husband and two children and son-in-law. Ex-tenant farmers on third and fourths in cotton. Had fifty dollars when set out. Went to Phoenix, picked cotton and pulled bolls, made eighty cents a day with two people picking bolls. Stayed until school closed. Went to Idaho, picked peas until August, left McCarl with forty dollars "in hand." Went to Cedar City and Parowan, Utah, a distance of 700 miles. Picked peas through September. Went to Hollister, Calipatria. Picked peas through October. Left for Calipatria for early peas which froze. Now receiving FSA food grant and waiting for work to begin. "Back in Oklahoma we was sinkin.' You work your head off for a crop and then see it burn up. You live in debts that you can never get out of. This isn't a good life, but I say it's a better life than that was."

A black and white photograph depicting six individuals, likely a family, engaged in agricultural work on an open field. The setting appears rural with two modest farm buildings visible in the background. Three adults are tending to crops directly; one man is kneeling while another stands over him examining plants closely. Two women hold children: one woman cradles an infant and the other supports a toddler atop her hip, both standing amidst rows of plants being cultivated by others.

This black and white photograph captures a moment of hardship for a family during the Great Depression in America. A man with rugged features is seated on an old tire, his hands resting on it as he looks off to the side with a serious expression. Beside him stand three women; one holds two young children while another cradles a baby, all looking directly at the camera with solemn expressions.

The family appears to be in front of their vehicle or farm equipment, suggesting they might have been traveling or working on an agricultural field that was affected by economic downturns during this period. The clothing worn by both adults and children is modest and practical, indicative of a time when people had limited resources due to financial struggles.

This image encapsulates the human cost of the Great Depression, as individuals were forced into difficult circumstances through no fault of their own. It serves as an important historical document that highlights the resilience and determination exhibited by families during such trying times in American history.

San Francisco, Calif., Apr. 1942 - residents of Japanese ancestry registering for evacuation and housing, later, in War Relocation Authority centers for duration of the war

#SanFrancisco #Calif #Japanese #JAPANESE #JapaneseAmericans #WorldWarII #WestCoast #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20017059

The image depicts a group of individuals standing in front of two signboards. The left side has the words "NOTICE" and "JAPANESE," while the right features another notice with illegible text due to resolution constraints.

Five people, presumably Japanese Americans during World War II based on historical context, are waiting for their turn or watching others register. They appear in formal attire; four women wear hats, coats, and dresses typical of mid-20th-century fashion, while a man is dressed similarly with spectacles resting on his head. Their body language ranges from passive observation to slight anxiety.

Behind them stands an old-fashioned metal mailbox labeled "U.S. MAIL STRIKE BOX NOT FOR PUBLIC USE," indicating the photo was taken during a time when mailboxes might be repurposed for other uses, possibly due to war-time shortages or restrictions on public services.

The setting seems utilitarian and temporary, indicative of administrative processes implemented by the War Relocation Authority (WRA), which relocated Japanese Americans from their West Coast homes into internment camps. The photo captures a moment of everyday life during wartime with undertones of tension and uncertainty about future conditions.
