The rather magnificent Galen Stone Tower, Green Hall, Wellesley College, 106 Central St, Wellesley MA photographed from Buck Hill. While only about 13 miles away, this has proven to be a very difficult target to get a good photograph of. This one certainly is not the best, but it was taken on a fairly good day for visibility and shows a fair amount of detail of the tower. Given the limitations of my current gear, this is probably going to be close to the best that I can get. From the vantage point of Buck Hill, Galen Stone Tower sits almost directly under the summit of Mount Wachusett. Mount Wachusett is about 45.7 miles away which gives one a really good scale at just how small most man-made objects are.

Unfortunately, this beautiful stone tower lies in an almost direct line with a not so beautiful communications tower, Needham Recycling and Transfer Station, 1421 Central Ave, Needham MA about 10.3 miles away. I took a stab at removing the comm tower using photoshop, so I have included that here as well, but full disclaimer that the first photo is the true depiction.

I have also included a photo I took of the tower on the Wellesley College campus. I happened to be in town for an appointment, and it was a quick detour to see this wonder up close.

St Joseph's Church, 115 Union St, Lynn MA photographed from Buck Hill. The olive green spire is a little hard to pick out against the brown background and the tip of the spire only just rises above the land behind it.

In front of the church is the Harbor Loft Apartments, 7 Liberty Square, Lynn MA. To the left of that is a fuel storage tank, National Grid, 277-399 Blossom Street Ext, Lynn MA. To the right of the church on the horizon is a water tower, 15 Colby St, Salem MA.

This photo is a great example of the stripes of land and water that form Boston Harbor. The first strip of land below has several houses visible, inclusing several on Lorean Terrace that are in Winthrop MA. The next strip of land is part of the runway for Logan Internation Airport, East Boston MA and to the left of frame a Jet Blue airliner can be seen. Below that is Castle Island, with a view of parts of Fort Independence. While most of the fort is behind trees, the structure can be made out through the bare branches. Below that is Head Island which has what looks like a lookout tower at the tip.

Neptune Towers apartments, 130 Neptune Blvd, Lynn MA photographed from Buck Hill.

I was going through some of my past photo shoots and came across this photo of this pair of apartment buildings reflecting the late day sun. I had not previously identified these buildings or much of the detail seen in this image. This particular day (Nov 2024) was marred by wildfire smoke and air turbulence, but with some corrections, I was able to get a decent resulting image.

As I am looking at the two apartment buildings, I noticed what appeared to be the faint outline of a tower, exactly between the two buildings. At first I thought my eyes were playing a trick on me, but it turns out this is the steeple of Saint Stephen's Memorial Episcopal Church, 74 S Common St, Lynn MA.

To the right of the aparment building is the former Mary T Ronan School, 154 Bradstreet Ave, Revere MA. This building now serves as housing for the elderly. Below the apartments and school building there are many houses that can be seen, most of which are on Pearl Ave, Revere MA.

Below the houses and above the water there is a bridge that spans between Saratoga St, East Boston and Main St Winthrop MA.

Below the bridge is a portion of Logan Airport with a couple of jets on the runways. Below the airport is part of Conley Terminal, 700 Summer St, South Boston MA. These look like they are adjoined in the photo, but they are on different pennisulas.

A the very bottom of the frame is an apartment building at 171 Walnut St, Dorchester MA and the spire of the Community Church of Neponset, 51 Walnut St, Dorchester MA.

Behind the library is the Windsor Village Apartments (15.7 mi), Sterns Hill Rd, Waltham MA.

The buildings in front of the library are actually all part of the Upper Campus of Boston College (9.6 mi). Two of the buildings visible are Kostka Hall and Gonzaga Hall. That funky looking red tower seems to be atop Cheverus Hall.

Stetson Hall, 6 South Main St and First Congregational Church, 1 South Main St both in Randolph MA as seen from Buck Hill. Also visible in the photo is the flagpole at Crawford Square (1 North Main St), Abington Bank (129 N Main St), and First Baptist Church, 518 N Main St, all in Randolph.

One of the interesting things about the view of Stetson Hall is that the building can be seen all the way to where it meets the ground. So recently after I had been up on Buck Hill to watch a sunrise, I took a drive and stood on the front porch of Stetson Hall and looked back at Buck Hill. Buck Hill is the only one of the Blue Hills visible from this vantage point. There are several things that can be seen in both photos including the flagpole (very right of frame), the Abington Bank building (just left of one of the street signs), the traffic lights and the cannon.

Just to the right of the Town Hall is the steeple of United Church of Norwood, 595 Washington St. In the center of the frame is the top of the tower and the steeple of St Catherine of Siena, 549 Washington St. In the upper right are two large water towers on the grounds of Norwood High School, 245 Nichols St.

# After the rain

Heavy rain last night but stopped (mostly) raining early this morning. Photo taken using a vintage (well, was new when bought) Canon manual focus macro lens on a Panasonic micro-four-thirds system camera. With a tripod. I love my old Canon FD lenses and they were a key contributing factor in my decision to buy the Panasonic when it came out (2008?).

High Rock Tower, 30 Circuit Ave, Lynn MA photographed from Buck Hill.

It almost looks like the tower is topped by a giant ring. In fact, the top of the tower has a silver dome which houses an astronomical observatory. I have not visited the observatory, but I did visit the tower itself. While the tower was not accessible, the walkway around the base is and offers some spectacular views.
