#capoeira last night: Out of 4 beginners, 3 called in sick! Another solo class for the one stalwart student.

In non-beginner class we did some practice of sequences and drumming for the upcoming batizado performance. We're not performing it, the kids are, but it was good grist for training and we needed practice drumming anyway.

#capoeira today: Scheduled day of me substitute-teaching adults class, as Contramestra is out of town again. I ran a few more "brain teaser" sequences and similar partner drills, including one where I said "here is the objective, but how you get there is up to you." People said afterward they appreciated the brain teasers.

had a roda together with the senzala group; sadly the space was only reserved for 1.5h and the stretches and stuff took probably most of that so the actual roda wasn't too long.. still nice, got hit in my face a few times because i'm not used to playing with people who actually finish the move lol; got to play the instruments a bit

after that we collectively decided to go to our group's place
had a wayyyyy longer roda with a proper buildup in speed and the music sounded much better too; either due to the space being smaller or just because we already had a lot of axé leftover from the previous one. didn't get hit in my face, too! played a total of like 5-6 times across the two rodas.

after the roda more or less finished we got pizza, at this point there were only like 8 of us so we just hanged around, then i decided to get the djembe from our training area to the lounge, which ultimately resulted in some half hour or so? of an impromptu jam session with two djembes and a guitar

Today, for Black History Month, we remember events of February 6, 1694: When the Brazilian authorities captured Dandara, warrior queen of the Quilombo dos Palmares. She committed suicide to avoid being forced back into slavery. Quilombo dos Palmares was a community of Afro-Brazilian people who freed themselves from enslavement. The community survived for nearly 90 years, with up to 30,000 residents, before the government finally suppressed it in 1694. Members of the community would raid plantations, slaughter the owners and free the enslaved people to come join them in Palmares. They used guerilla warfare, using weapons obtained from Portuguese traders and, possibly, capoeira.

As a young girl, Dandara joined a group of Afro-Brazilians to fight against slavery in Brazil. As an adult, she helped create military strategies to protect Palmares. She played an important role in making her husband, Zumbi dos Palmares, cut ties with his uncle Ganga-Zumba, who was the first big chief of Quilombo dos Palmares. In 1678, Ganga-Zumba signed a peace treaty with the government. All those born in Palmares were to be free and given permission to engage in commerce. However, in exchange, they had to stop giving refuge to runaway slaves and collaborate with the Portuguese authorities in arresting runaways. Dandara and Zumbi opposed the deal because it did not end slavery and made Palmares complicit in its perpetuation.

The story of Zumbi, Dandara and the Quilombo do Palmares is depicted in the truly superb 1984 film “Quilombo,” directed by Carlos Diegues, with music by Gilberto Gil.
