According to Consumer Labs:
“PFAS May Lower Vitamin Levels
Increased exposure to PFAS ("forever chemicals") has been linked with decreased blood levels of certain vitamins, according to a recent review.“

Isn’t folate necessary for healthy babies?

. . . developmental outcomes such as low infant birth weights, and cancer (National Academies, Guidance on PFAS 2022; Fenton, Environ Toxicol Chem 2021; EPA 2018; CDC 2020), as well as with decreased blood levels of vitamin D among older people (possibly due to increased activation a liver enzyme involved in vitamin D metabolism caused by the binding of PFAS to the vitamin D receptor), accelerated breakdown of vitamin E (possibly due to increased oxidation), and decreased blood levels of folate (possibly because folate is used by the body to replenish glutathione that is depleted by PFAS) and vitamin B-12 (possibly due to direct interactions with PFAS). However, higher quality research is needed to confirm these effects as being caused by PFAS and whether they result in clinically relevant adverse effects (Liu, Nutrients 2025).

Consumer Labs found that some oats on the market contained a disturbing amount of gluten.

I would share the article but I think you have to log onto to read it.

Rolled Quaker Oats 100% Whole Grain Oats Old Fashioned has 672.3 ppm gluten in it. It goes off the chart below there is so much gluten in them.

The 365 brand oats from Whole Foods was at the top of their approved list. I don’t like to praise any Bezos business but at least those oats are gluten free for real.

(if you are using a screen reader and you are interested in the details of the charts below that didn’t end up in the alt text I can read the whole thing into a voice memo for you, just DM me)

What Consumer Labs found:
Gluten - A Disturbing Finding
As shown in the graph below and in the 2nd column of the Results table, a surprisingly high level of gluten (672.3 ppm) was found in Quaker Oats 100% Whole Grain Oats Old Fashioned. A second container with the same lot number showed a similar result (737.6 ppm). This means that a person who is trying to avoid gluten should avoid this product. (Quaker Oats Old Fashioned Oats was also discovered, in 2022, to contain the highest amount of the chemical chlormequat in a sample of oat-based products - although the amount found was well below the EPA limit. This chemical is not permitted to be applied to oats but can occur as a contaminating residue.)

They all look bad. Bob’s red Mill organic old-fashioned rolled whole grain oats contains non-detectable amounts of arsenic, but they have the second largest amount of lead for example.
Bob’s red mill organic steel cut oats has a small amount of lead no detectable amounts of cadmium, but the most amount of arsenic in this chart.
