According to Consumer Labs:
“PFAS May Lower Vitamin Levels
Increased exposure to PFAS ("forever chemicals") has been linked with decreased blood levels of certain vitamins, according to a recent review.“

Isn’t folate necessary for healthy babies?

Screenshot from ConsumerLabs.com take 5/20/25:

. . . developmental outcomes such as low infant birth weights, and cancer (National Academies, Guidance on PFAS 2022; Fenton, Environ Toxicol Chem 2021; EPA 2018; CDC 2020), as well as with decreased blood levels of vitamin D among older people (possibly due to increased activation a liver enzyme involved in vitamin D metabolism caused by the binding of PFAS to the vitamin D receptor), accelerated breakdown of vitamin E (possibly due to increased oxidation), and decreased blood levels of folate (possibly because folate is used by the body to replenish glutathione that is depleted by PFAS) and vitamin B-12 (possibly due to direct interactions with PFAS). However, higher quality research is needed to confirm these effects as being caused by PFAS and whether they result in clinically relevant adverse effects (Liu, Nutrients 2025).

Ha ha...when I said those things, I glossed over an experimental process that took me about two months.

My process involved isolating variables, adjusting nutrients, etc. It was hard. I cannot be sure I reached the right conclusion. Which is why, above, I included the words "I think ... ." The folic acid and folate, collectively, really did seem to explain everything best. It certainly was a surprise because—again—my folic acid and folate never even had dropped to an unhealthy level. I was never actually deficient.

Weird, right? Similarly, my main symptom was perhaps too much of a bizarre, individual phenomenon to guide you (sorry!): I kept getting mild headaches, four or five days per week, that felt oddly "concentrated" in the same tiny spot. Whereas all other headaches in my life felt more "diffuse." Also, my new "concentrated" headaches were my only ones, in years, that weren't preceded by auras.

They've never come back, though, since I ramped up the folic acid and folate—ceteris paribus.

The obvious solution was for me to get commensurate folic acid and folate, collectively, from other foods. Thus, I tricked my body into feeling that I was still consuming lots of bread, when I really wasn't. I am sharing my experience because you'll maybe need or want to pull off this same trick if you begin managing carbs, too. In the US or someplace similar.

And I'm still doing this. Specifically, other carb sources I rely upon for folic acid and folate, making up for the relative lack of bread, are mainly broccoli (35%), fat free milk (17%), and cereal (10%)—to name several that I continue to gladly eat. Meanwhile, much of the remaining 38% is from foods which mostly don't have carbs.

Lastly, a tangential remark: broccoli is often called a "superfood." It offers a generous supply of nutrients while also being stunningly low in Calories. I have found that all kinds of nutrition optimizations can be handled by leveraging broccoli, as I just mentioned, or other superfoods. Fat free milk has very broad value as well.

Is anybody here into #nutrition? I want to share an experience I had some years ago, regarding carbohydrate consumption...

As an American, I figure that the key to managing carbs is to eat significantly less bread than people in my nation usually do. This is because bread doesn't have a lot of nutritional value, compared to other carb sources. So, in America, being selective about carbs inevitably means cutting back on all the bread that's seemingly everywhere.

Most of our bread is fortified with folic acid. Hence, something I think I noticed, when I began to control carbs by eating much less bread, was that my body reacted a little poorly to that nutrient's reduction. Even though my intake of folic acid and folate was still at a healthy level—! It just was no longer as high as I had been accustomed to.

In Germany and the UK, over 95% of the population meets recommended levels for niacin and vitamin B12. In the USA, men are doing well with riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, and B12. But there's a vitamin gap in vitamin D and folate!

Are there any recommendations for diet and supplementing ? I didn't do that until recently and I want to avoid taking too much folate because it can in high doses over time negatively affect uptake.

Well, I'm happy that I finally published an article from my doctorate... as a preprint.
We evaluated how serum folate was associated with genome-wide blood #DNAmethylation (#EWAS).
We found three methylation sites strongly associated with serum #folate and several with nominal association.
