Brown Cow Hill from Corgarff Castle in Aberdeenshire with Moray yesterday. Sounds an unimaginative name, until you remember that many of the Gaelic hill names – Black Hill, White Hill, Grey Hill, Red Hill, Big Hill, Small Hill – aren’t exactly inspiring.
We did have some wildlife encounters – a mountain hare very visible still in its winter coat, and a few red grouse – which were great to see.

An uneven hillside, with heather and peaty hollows, covered in frost. A white mountain hare is runnihng across, very visible against the brownish ground. A hazy mountain with patches of snow at the back.

A small summit cairn on a grassy & heathery hill. In the distance a higher fairly level mountain with snow patches. Motray the dog stood next to the cairn.

A fence, wooden fence posts with wire wide mesh panels, going across the pic. There are 2 gates in the fence, a wide vehies width one and a snarrower pedestrian one. Moray the dog stood next to the fence. The ground is low heathery vegetation. Blue sky with wispy clouds.

Corgarff Castle, in a wild and lonely setting at the head of Strathdon, on the flank of the Cairngorms and guarding the quickest route from Deeside to Speyside.
