#DataBill

Welcome to the algo-state 🤖

The government is embracing automated, opaque systems to make decisions affecting our lives while making it easier to share and repurpose personal data across departments.

And with the UK #DataAct, we have less ability to put right what AI gets wrong.

Next up, the AI Bill...

The UK Data Act guts the right not to be subject to automated decision-making.

We've seen cases in recruitment of marginalised groups being negatively impacted by AI that's trained on biased data.

Workers could face greater discrimination, as they're disempowered against employers' decisions to use these tools irresponsibly.

Passing the responsibility for fair working conditions from multi-billion £ companies to workers is clearly unfair.

We need a strong, rights based framework to favour the responsible development and use of AI.

We need the Information Commissioner's Office to step up and address the imbalance of power created by the UK Data Act.

Gig workers for platforms like Deliveroo or Uber are managed by algorithm, which has resulted robo-firing.

The UK Data Act makes it easier for employers to use automated decision-making.

This could worsen workers rights, as the burden to challenge a decision falls on the individual, not the company.

Gig workers have relied on data protection to plug the gap in employment law.

But the UK Data Act stacks the deck further in favour of business.

By making subject access requests harder and automated decision-making easier, workers are on a losing streak.

The UK Data Act increases the barriers to getting your personal data and lets companies delay or obstruct subject access requests.

This significantly impacts gig workers.

The ability to access their data is often the only way to understand why their supplier agreement might have been terminated and challenge it.

The UK passes the Data (Use and Access) Bill, sparking criticism from creatives as it lacks a requirement for companies to disclose use of copyrighted material in AI training.

The passing of the UK Data Bill is a power grab from the public to the powerful.

Organisations will now be able to do more things with your personal data and you'll have less ability to push back.

Quote from James Baker, ORG Programme Manager – Platform Power: "At a time when people increasingly feel they aren’t in control, Government has made it easier for Big Tech to make automated decisions about us."

While the public debate has focussed on the impact of AI on the creative industries, the Data Bill is harmful for everyone in the UK.

ORG will continue to fight for strong data protection because #DigitalRightsAreHumanRights.

Despite scandals such as officers accessing the files of Sarah Everard, the police no longer have to record why they're accessing someone’s data on a police database under the UK Data Bill.

This reduces accountability at a time when the police should be reassuring the public.

With the passing of the UK Data Bill, people are now in less control over how algorithms and AI make important decisions that affect their lives.

We called for additional safeguards around the use of automated decision making alongside trade unions, civil society groups and experts.

This was rejected, meaning it's harder to object when things go wrong.

🚨 BREAKING: DATA RIGHTS 🚨

The UK Parliament has passed the Data Use and Access Bill, which contains dangerous changes to data protection law.

People will now have less control over their personal data. That means more automated decision-making, less accountable data sharing and the future of the EU-UK adequacy agreement put in question.

Last week, ORG joined @edri and @privacyint in warning that this attack on privacy in the UK Data Bill threatens the UK’s future trade and collaboration with Europe.

Losing our adequacy status when the UK government is trying to grow the economy would be disastrous.

The passing of the UK Data Bill is also a blow for democratic procedures in the UK, as we warned in our open letter signed by civil society groups and experts.

Government Ministers can now change the way our data is shared with minimal Parliamentary scrutiny.

UK Lords again block gov Data Bill, siding with creators against AI scraping. Baroness Kidron slams Silicon Valley for trying to redefine theft, demanding AI firms get permission for copyrighted work. Big win for artists.

#Labour Party use on obscure procedure to block a Lords transparency amendment to the #DataBill forcing #AI companies to reveal what copyrighted sources their models are using. Who benefits from this beyond Tony Blair Institute clients? theguardian.com/technology/202

The UK Data Bill amendment for digital verification services to record 'sex at birth' and 'acquired gender' is set to be rejected.

This would've effectively created a transgender label.

With the government given powers to change data protection rules at any time without Parliamentary scrutiny, this data could be used to discriminate against #trans people in an increasingly hostile climate.

The House of Lords has voted for an amendment to the Data Bill which could force tech companies to inform creatives when their work is going to be used to train LLMs, so they can opt out.

Data has become an extension of our identity, our personality, our life.

Data protection rights allow you to assert your own interests and retain control over your life.

In the wake of the regressive UK Supreme Court ruling, this amendment to the UK Data Bill would further expose trans people to harms.
