> I remember hearing the late, great attorney Leonard Weinglass say after **Clinton’s** anti-terrorism bill,

> “If I had to live in a country without elections or without habeas corpus, I’d forgo elections.”

> Never forget also who paved the road for Trumpism over the last generation...

> The day, as programmed by the NFL, was set to celebrate New Orleans’s incredible history of Black music and culture. Yet, given the current climate of voluntary surrender to Donald Trump’s “anti-DEI” (anti-Black) obsession, it would not have surprised me if the NFL pulled the plug and just showed a hologram of Hank Williams Jr. on a loop...

> Gambling can develop into an addiction like smoking, where you itch without the (figurative or literal) dice in your hands.
> This matters now because the same sports world that banned Rose, with the haughty air of a pope excommunicating an inveterate sinner, is now besotted with gambling. Our smartphones are now portable sportsbooks, and the leagues have reaped billions from the industry.

> Women’s soccer in Spain is exploding in popularity—despite the decades of patriarchal abuse and mismanagement. As the players glow in their triumph, they also need to seize the opportunity to change the soccer culture, to make Spanish soccer hostile to the sexists and ensure women’s soccer gets the resources—and the coaching—they deserve.

> If somebody’s getting beat up, you should be right there getting beat up, too. I think that our[white people's] role in this is tremendous, because we benefit so much, and we have benefited so much, and there’s yet to be a true national reckoning and acknowledgement and admission to what we did in the past and what we continue to do.

Even in Japan, I sometimes end up in a conversation about Gringo football. David Zirin helps me find worthwhile parts so the talk isn't as big a waste of my time.

This article is from ten years ago, but recent news about responses to a near-death on the field suggest not much has changed. I'm looking for an article that mentioned player union demands for safer grass on the fields.

.> officials who—I mean, at the risk of sounding unkind—are unskilled, untrained scabs who are in over their heads on an NFL field in front of 70,000 fans. They have no idea what they’re doing. And that’s what made Monday night such a big story, is that it crystallized in front of a national audience the problems of both corporate arrogance as well as unskilled, non-union workers.

> The Bob McNairs and John Elways of the world hate the idea of a freethinking, openly anti-racist player more than they love the idea of winning a Super Bowl. That damns this league as much as hiding concussion data and ignoring instances of violence against women. It’s more evidence that the league’s moral compass points in one direction.. toward remaking this country in their political image.. where billionaires make.. us.. salute on demand.
