#DealCastle

For #TravelTuesday a jump back to 2014 and a long weekend spent in Kent. This is Deal Castle, one of Henry VIII's Device Forts, a series of fortifications built around the coast to protect England from the threat of European Catholic forces after his breaking from the church in 1533 so he could marry, divorce, and behead with impunity.

It's a bright day with vibrant blue sky and patchy white clouds. We're looking at the walls of a low artillery castle, a sixteenth century fortification with walls formed of six low, circular bastions arranged in a hexagon with a raised circular tower in the centre. There's a low ditch surrounding the walls - a dry moat - and we're looking at the castle from the curtain wall with one of the bastions bulging out towards us and one of the other bastions sticking out behind to the left, both with gun positions evident around their perimeters. A flag pole emerges from the second bastion with the English Heritage flag of white with a red portcullis symbol on it.
