A stone castle with a central arched entrance flanked by two towers under a clear blue sky. Each tower displays colorful banners; the left has blue with gold fleur-de-lis, and the right has red with yellow stripes. Flags, including one Union Jack, fly above the towers. A paved pathway leads straight to the entrance.

#medway #kent Took a bit of a ramble off route while out cycling on Sunday just gone.

A few converted barges / houseboats moored up at Twinney Wharf close to Lower Halstow.

Tightly cropped in camera (phone); I couldn't get much closer and there was a lot of clutter in the foreground.

A couple of old converted barges moored up on the Medway estuary. Cropped quite tight to compensate for not getting closer and wanting to miss out objects in the foreground. The tide is low and the weather is in keeping with a cold and clear January afternoon.

For #TravelTuesday a jump back to 2014 and a long weekend spent in Kent. This is Deal Castle, one of Henry VIII's Device Forts, a series of fortifications built around the coast to protect England from the threat of European Catholic forces after his breaking from the church in 1533 so he could marry, divorce, and behead with impunity.

It's a bright day with vibrant blue sky and patchy white clouds. We're looking at the walls of a low artillery castle, a sixteenth century fortification with walls formed of six low, circular bastions arranged in a hexagon with a raised circular tower in the centre. There's a low ditch surrounding the walls - a dry moat - and we're looking at the castle from the curtain wall with one of the bastions bulging out towards us and one of the other bastions sticking out behind to the left, both with gun positions evident around their perimeters. A flag pole emerges from the second bastion with the English Heritage flag of white with a red portcullis symbol on it.

I'd not want to go without water utilities so don't complain (too much) about rising bills but all the same -- what the hell -- performance management!

"...a continuous, industrial-scale loss of treated water — enough in 2024/25 (for just these three companies) to equal:

51,186 Olympic swimming pools a year

~4.13 Bewl Waters a year

A 2,559 km “pool chain” — roughly London to Istanbul, made of water that never reached a tap

In a region where hosepipe bans, drought warnings, and emergency supply events are now familiar characters in the local news, it’s hard to escape the central question:

If water is life, why does the system tolerate losing it at this scale — year after year — and calling it “performance management”?

Kent is such a beautiful place in England. If you come, hire a car and get lost in the little market towns of this great county.
