Renters and Housing Union members in the East and West marched in support of International Worker's Day (May 1).
RAHU members in Naarm (Melbourne) attended the radical rank and file union member march on May 1. Marching through the city to the 8 Hour Monument, the rally featured speakers from the Retails and Fast Food Workers Union (RAFFWU), United Workers Union (UWU), Free Palestine Melbourne, Defend the Unions - Defend the CFMEU, Voice of Revolution Iran and the Latin America Solidarity Network.
In Walyalup (Fremantle), RAHU members attended the May Day Festival, held annually on the first Sunday in May. The festival that has a long history of radical unionism in a town with a radical union history.
WA branch members embodied this spirit and collectively came together to run a stall filled with unique merch, such as ‘Housing Affordabili-tea’ bags, that showed off our creativity.
The day was a great testament to the branch's member-run culture as a majority of the work was done by rank-and-file members. As part of the day, we marched in the streets under the banner of ‘Fuck Landlords, Join Your Union’ that highlighted our no nonsense approach and willingness to the name the biggest roadblock to housing for all: landlords - as well as its solution: people in the grassroots working together to take collective action.
