For the last little while I've been wanting to implement a "real-world" tool in #Haskell, to bridge the gap in my understanding between pure, fairly abstract functions and actually interacting with people, files, network services etc. I've mostly used Haskell for solving Advent of Code puzzles but those all have well-formed input and no need to deal with unexpected stuff.

A tool to work with #BagIt packages (https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc8493) seems about the right size so I'm giving that a try. #digipres

Sometimes, it is all about perseverance.

And in some cases, a problem persists for 20 years until you are able to solve it.

Trying to save an incredible game by IJsfontein that is full of very personal childhood memories is my current "this will never work" problem.

i noticed that John Broomhall's exceptionally creepy X-COM UFO Defense soundtrack for the (surprisingly good) PSX port didn't have a lossless version available anywhere.

weirdly, binchunker couldn't extract the redbook audio tracks from the PSX cd (even in psx mode), and every track had to be manually imported into audacity as raw audio. if anyone has to do this again, the correct settings for import are: Signed 16-bit PCM/Stereo/Little-Endian/44100hz

There's been a lot of effort to preserve things like Flash and GIFs, but has anyone tried to put together an archive of Java applets? Several web and archive.org searches have come up empty. I did find reference to one book from 1997 that included an applet library on CD, but neither the (physical) book nor its CD are anywhere to be found either.

I can't be the only one who cares about it, am I? :thonk:

Is anyone aware of any useful #digipres writing on iPhoto? Google isn't turning up much.

I'm currently pulling data off of our optical disk backlog, and found an iPhoto library on one of the disks. My understanding is that the metadata is stored separately (in the files w/ extension .attr), and I'd love to be able to check them for annotations/captions
