Happy #DocumentFreedomDay everyone! 🤩 Today, the Open Source Club at OSU had members present templates made in the open OPT standard, bringing more creative resources to the open format community at large! Big props to @dff and @libreoffice for all the work they do in bringing accessibility and sovereignty to people’s academic and professional digital lives. 😎 We can’t wait to do it again next year!

Here I am, writting this simple text, and there you are, reading it. There is something quasi-magical in the simplicity of this remote and asyncronous communication, how easy it is for someone, somehow, to write a toot that someone, somehow will be able to read. But for me the real magic is in those two keywords and the variety they represent: the someone, the somehow. You can read this, it does not matter where or how I wrote it. And you, the reader, can be anywere in the world, you can be reading this on a desktop computer, or a tablet, a phone, a wristwatch, via e-mail or RSS, on a fediverse client or maybe a twtxt one. It does not matter if you are my neighbor or across the world, rich or poor, no one needs to know your gender, your height, how many cookies you ate today.

All of this, this quasi-magical simplicity, is possile because we use Open Standards. And today I welcome you to join me in celebrating them, and with you a happy #DocumentFreedomDay !

Today is Document Freedom Day. We celebrate developments that support open standards and open formats.
Our contribution: repositories for open and FAIR data storage, workshops for FAIR research data management. And an open source laboratory journal "Chemotion ELN", which is specially programmed for the needs of chemists and supports the creation of open data.

Today is #DocumentFreedomDay!

The first rule of Document #Freedom Day is that we talk about open #document formats and tools that allow documents to be accessed, edited and shared by anyone, without restrictions or reliance on specific software or vendor lock-in.

I wrote the post below to talk about the #free and #open formats and #opensource tools that I am using for the #writing #typesetting and #layout of Return of the Ripper.

Today is #DocumentFreedomDay.

I was just thinking that I started using OpenOffice.org about 15 years ago, and LibreOffice shortly after that. I remember compatibility with MSOffice being less than stellar back then. Nowadays I find LibreOffice can open MSOffice files with near perfect formatting far more often than not.

LibreOffice also comes with a configurable UI so you can switch between the classic menu and ribbon.

LibreOffice Impress is a bit less polished than Writer and Calc IMO. But it works good enough for me.

These days MSOffice uploads copious amounts of UI interaction data and god knows what else to data.microsoft.com. No thanks!

Thanks to #LibreOffice and The Document Foundation for providing a free and open source office suite that defaults to using open standards.

March 26 is #DocumentFreedomDay, a day to acknowledge and celebrate the role of open standards in our lives.

Open standards are a common language that all computers can speak. When it comes to documents, spreadsheets and slide decks the premier standard is OpenDocument (.odt, .ods, .odp). If you use LibreOffice you may be familiar with these file extensions, if so you are already using OpenDocument.

Office Open XML (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) is another standard created later, mainly used by Microsoft Office. It is actually a dual standard with two schemas, Strict and Transitional, the latter which allows proprietary (non-open) extensions. Only the latter transitional standard is in widespread use as it is the default save format of Microsoft Office. These proprietary extensions have been reverse engineered by others to create compatibility with Microsoft Office. That certainly doesn't sound very open to us.
