Okay, instead of only dunking on the not-great parts of The #DresdenFiles , I should also point out some parts which really meant something to me.

For giggles, I re-read through the entire #DresdenFiles series in the past few days.

My takeaways, in no particular order:

  • They are more allosexually horny than I remembered.
  • So much hashtag-NoHomo. Even in some of the more recent books.
  • The treatment of women is not great. Not in the graphic VAW sense, but in the more subtle and egregious sense of "women in their place".

I still think they say quite a bit about the consequences of compulsory masculinity ... but not as clearly as I'd thought.

Expanded thoughts in thread.

Dresden deals with protesters turned violent by dark-forces-outside-agitators, he bemoans the lack of military action in Chicago because of stupid politics. Made me feel queasy.

Jim Butcher – THE DRESDEN FILES: TWELVE MONTHS

Der letzte Harry Dresden-Roman BATTLE GROUND war dann doch schon länger her, als ich gedacht hätte, der erschien bereits 2021.

Book cover artwork. A dark-haired man in a fedora and long leather coat stands facing forward, holding a wooden staff topped with a glowing ember. A bright, circular magical sigil with runes glows behind his head like a halo, casting gold light. Green crystal formations rise around him in a shadowy, cavern-like setting. Bold white text reads “Jim Butcher” at the top and “Twelve Months” at the bottom, with the subtitle “A Novel of the Dresden Files.”

Yesterday morning, I finished the 3rd book in the (Harry) Dresden Files series. And, I have started the 4th one...
Slowly making some reading progress...
More info on the third book, I shared here: beige.party/@PlaystationPixy/115993428585903630 (more info on other books in that same thread).

A clear, vertical shot of a Kobo H2O e-reader glowing against a dark background, showcasing a deep dive into Jim Butcher’s "The Dresden Files." The screen is set to the "My Books" library view, sorted by series, displaying the first five installments of the urban fantasy saga.
The progress indicators show a solid start to the series: Storm Front (Book 1), Fool Moon (Book 2), and Grave Peril (Book 3) are all marked with a satisfying "Finished" label in the top right corner of their respective entries. Below them, Summer Knight (Book 4) and Death Masks (Book 5) are listed as "Unread," sitting ready for the next reading session.
Each entry includes a small thumbnail of the gritty book cover, the title in a bold serif font, and technical details like the file type (KOBO EPUB) and file size. The interface is clean and minimalist; the top navigation bar shows the time as 5:00 alongside icons for brightness and battery, while the bottom menu highlights that the user is currently active in the "My Books" section. The e-ink display is crisp and well-illuminated, capturing a cozy, digital bookworm vibe.

Twelve Months by Jim Butcher: It’s been a long wait for the next Dresden Files novel, and for me, it was worth the wait. While largely an epilogue to Battle Ground, it still covers quite a bit of ground in terms of advancing the overall narrative. It’s not as high stakes as some other novels, but Harry learns some important lessons. And equally important alliances are made. It covers enough that the next “case file” can be a bit more cleanly told. #DresdenFiles #Books

Ich komme ja über den Flachwitz in den neuen #DresdenFiles nicht weg. Die Gargylen "Basil", "Thyme", "Sage" & Co:

Finished the latest #DresdenFiles book, Twelve Months. It was actually quite good, and is a great lesson to not write off an author just because they have a couple of mid entries in a row.

I gather Butcher was having some real shit life problems during the previous few books too, and he’s apparently in a much better place now – and it shows! Good for him.

And just like that, another Dresden book down. Every time I finish one of these books, I wonder how the next one could possibly be as good.. And every time, they are.

Can't wait for more.

Finished the new Dresden book! The pacing was a little different than normal, but still enjoyed it. I wish I didn't have to wait so long for the next one haha

NEW EPISODE: Butcher made us wait awhile for Twelve Months, Bk 17 of The Dresden Files, but not me — here's my review just 6 days after release. No worries, spoiler-lite. Safe to listen if you've read the other 17, see what's in store! #DresdenFiles youtu.be/-zO20HvA5DY

How should Harry have dealt with the protestors?

Was he right to leave them alone?
As long as no one/nothing was harmed by the demonstrations?

"This is still America," I said. "I can complain about anything I want, no matter how irrational." - Harry Dresden, Twelve Months. #DresdenFiles

Finished "Twelve Months", the latest (18th!) book in the #DresdenFiles series by Jim Butcher. Thoroughly enjoyable. No notes.

No spoilers, just vibes: I'm not a big believer in the "urban fantasy is just a metaphor for the queer experience" take. Sometimes, vampires and werewolves and wizards are just ways to tell a story that doesn't have to make perfect sense. But also, sometimes it still catches you right in the queer feels. I get it.

Also, I'm not saying you should read an 18-book treatise on the dangers of compulsory masculinity and the rotting phage that is bottled-up anger. But you could do far worse.
